What level of meta applies here?

Alright, so they're obviously actors and it's obviously scripted. What I can't figure out is this:

Is this show trying to pass itself off as real, and just doing a terribly unconvincing job?

Or are the creators aware of how blatantly bad it all is, and pushing it the cheesy/cliche route on purpose, because it's funny?

The former is sad, while the latter is brilliant. I can't decide.

I'm guessing the latter, because look at how much money has been made off of mocking horror film cliches.

"I wanna, I gotta be adored."

I hope you're correct - I kind of enjoy it on that level.

Keep in mind this comes from Sam Raimi and Robert Tapert, the guys behind Hercules & Xena. Prior to those, Raimi gained his fame with the Evil Dead movies before eventually moving on to Spider-Man. So yes there is going to be that cheese factor with the Raimi sense of horror. It's an attempt at a horror reality show but relies too much on expecting the viewers to suspend their belief and think these people are actually in jeopardy. The biggest drag on it is by claiming the contestants are being 'killed' which everyone obviously knows isn't going to happen. Simply trying to rephrase "kill" to some other ambiguous term may help. Either way, I still have a guilty pleasure of enjoyment watching the show. I found it hilarious that horror movie buff Cody fell to one of the cardinal rules of never being alone.
