The 'boat people'

Did anybody else feel a glimmer of hope when our incredibly morose and tedious lead couple bumped into the "boat couple"?

For a brief moment, I thought there was a chance that the movie would go somewhere. Boy was I fooled...

I assume that they were dropped into the movie to show how uptight and boring the two other couples were, but instead they just reminded me how uptight and boring the movie was.
