Consumer Advice: Contains very strong language and a scene of sexual violence

Extended Classification Information is available for this work. ECI may contain plot details and/or spoilers.

TYRANNOSAUR is a drama set in Leeds about an alcoholic widower who strikes up a friendship with a Christian charity shop worker. The film was classified '18' for very strong language and a scene of sexual violence.

The main character spends much of his time drunk and raging against the world. His language is frequently strong and occasionally very strong. The BBFC's Guidelines at '15' state 'There may be frequent use of strong language (for example, "f---"). The strongest terms (for example, "c--t") may be acceptable if justified by the context. Aggressive or repeated use of the strongest language is unlikely to be acceptable'. Several of the uses of very strong language are aggressive and directed at other characters. Therefore the film was more appropriately classified at '18'.

TYRANNOSAUR also includes a complex scene of marital rape. The Guidelines at '15' state 'Any portrayal of sexual violence must be discreet and have a strong contextual justification'. The scene in question possesses a strong contextual justification in terms of the film's narrative and lacks detail of nudity, meaning that it involves an element of discretion. Nonetheless, the scene also contains some strong and aggressive sexual language that reinforces the sense of humiliation the woman is suffering. It is this which renders the scene less than discreet and makes the scene more appropriately classified at '18'.
