Did anybody see it coming that she had killed James? When Joe goes to the house and finds the husband's body I still was thinking there would be a fight scene and that Joe would either beat him up or be beaten up.
It wasn't a massive twist as such but it was nicely effective and explains Hannah not wanting to go in the house in the earlier scene with Joe.
Anyway just wanted to say what an excellent film it was, beautifully acted and directed and one of the best films of the last few years. Peter Mullan is always excellent and intensely believable in every role he plays but Olivia Colman was equally great and surprised me as I'm only used to seeing her in comedy, much like Kathy Burke (Nil By Mouth and known for comedy)
Paddy made a really mature, sobering quality film here.

Yeah, I meant to say in my OP that when Joe first sees James in thebedroom I thought he had killed himself too but as he stood staring at him you could tell the wounds were hardly what a man killing himself would do. Also he was slumped against the wall on the floor, so I just knew then she had killed him.
Definitely a nice little twist there.

Didn't expect hubby to be dead - but other than the whole film was so feckin predictable and bleedin obvious. IF hubby had been alive -you seriuosly think she still would have gone to house????? - get feckin real ffs Actually , i tell a lie - the real shock was finding out her weedy bully hubby had a harder punch than Mike Feckin Tyson - the size of her shiner was unbeliveable - a bit like the a55 licking hysteria hype the film created

Are you aiming your vitriol at me? It's a bit confusing your reply Tali1. You say "didn't expect hubby to be dead" and then you say "IF hubby had been alive you seriously think she would have gone to the house?" making us believe that you DID believe the hubby was dead. I don't think that was predictable at all and you seem confused over what you knew or didn't know was going to happen. You see what I mean? You made a confusing statement above. Also I'd hardly call it predictable as a whole because if we all didn't know that she would end up snapping and killing her hubby then we could not foresee that it would end with her in prison. I think we all knew that Joe would change- maybe that much was predictable. I knew it would be a film about redemption and salvation but as much as I knew that Joe would help Hannah and Hannah help Joe, I really didn't see it ending with Hannah in prison. BECAUSE I didn't think -and nor did you it seems- that she would kill the husband.

No confusion on my part. The dead hubby WAS a surprise ( "i didn't expect that") Whether i believed hubby was dead is frankly irrelevant. My point is that , if we assume hubby was alive - would she have gone to house with the confrontational "lover boy" Joseph? " -NO "Hello , hubby , i've come to collect my belongings .BTW , Joseph is Not shagging me , he has just come to help me" Hubby " Okay ,get your stuff and go" I don't .......think so... Why? because she was *beep* scared of hubby , passive and would do everything to avoid further confrontation. Imho.

As she was being raped i saw the knife next to her and thought (and hoped) that she would stab him but of course the scene cut short so when it was finally revealed that she did i was surprised and i didn't see it coming
There are two kinds of people in the world my friend those with loaded guns and those who dig
Except for the end, the movie was predictable yes. It's not a thriller, it's a drama. Who cares if it's predictable, life itself is predictable. What is the problem with that? As for her shiner, perhaps you should try and experience one before opening your mouth. I grew up in a home with a similar situation like hers, and this movie was scaringly wellmade, very close to the truth. So shut the f** up.
When Joseph was searching the house, I thought he might find that James had hanged himself. When he found him dead I still thought it was suicide, until it became obvious that the wounds weren't self inflicted.
The following scene, when Joseph confronted Hannah, was also very hard to predict. The tension at the beginning of that scene was amazing.
I understand now why she wasnt ready to enter the house yet - memories of killing etc
However, I dont know why she didnt report it at the time as self defence. Also, how did she manage to do it - was it a stabbing definately (couldnt quite see)
I felt sorry for her tho. I dont know why she went to jail, she suffered enough already.
