Man is a wolf to man

Did Considine live this kind of life in his childhood? Or is he living it, perhaps repeating it? Because what else would explain this incredibly dark movie? He wrote it, so it had to come somewhere in him. The movie is so intimate and even clinical in it's dissection of the life of the main characters that it could not be pure imagination. And why write something this dark and depressing from imagination?

Somebody should tell Considine that live really is not this dark. Yes, there are bad moments in everybody's life, but why make a movie trying to prove all of it is shit? It is not. Mostly life is great. We control our own destinies. We do not have to live in shit. And most of us do not. This movie goes out and tries to prove all life is shit. It is not.

This movie is a disgrace. It offends me deeply.

Have you even seen the film? David Lynch is from Montana and lived a very normal life and yet ERASERHEAD came out of him. He wasn't abused or insane. He didn't "live it." It's a film about a group of people dealing with alcoholism and rage. Quite rampant in society actually, so the film is very topical. If you saw the film you'd know it isn't all dark and actually has sparks of hope.

How would this movie offend you ?

I find this film strangely beautiful and redemptive amid its brutal darkness. A rather unusual story about kindness (in bad/broken people), faith and friendship.

I don't think the film is trying to prove anything about life. It certainly does seem personal, but it is simply an almost objective look at lives affected by these issues. Because it does happen. Of course it doesn't happen to everyone. But if i happened to everyone why would anyone bother to invest time watching it?

The fact you feel so affected by it shows that it is truly a piece of cinematic art. It provoked a reaction whilst touching on very relevant issues in Britain at this moment. There was nothing in this to say it happens to everyone, and it almost gives a small spark of hope for a character who is more or less doomed.

"It's a reflection of the world and characters I grew up around, a love letter to my mother and an attempt to understand my father's behaviour. I was trying to make sense of the world I lived in, my relationship with my dead parents, my ideas about god, faith, and the human spirit. But ultimately it's about love"

OP I'm not sure he lived this kind of life, but i think that's irrelevant. Considine wrote a screenplay...and he can write whatever he wants. I think the main question is: why is there such a demand for type of film? It seems as though the more used we get to violence in film, the more we have to top it. But I think you're naieve if you think things like this dont happen, they do, and Considine has done something good becuase this type of film can shed a light on the disposessed. I've never met anyone like Joseph but I've seen people like him. I think fiction can shed a light on certain things.

If the OP thinks that about this film he should never watch Gary Oldman's Nil By Mouth,Tim Roth's The War Zone, any thing by Ken Loach and Mike Leigh or most European drama in general.
What the British, Irish and Europeans do so well is tell very human stories in very subtle ways.
Jesus if he thinks this is bad he should never watch any heavy-going dramas.
Even if Paddy had lived this life, does it matter. Have you ever heard of semi-autobiographical screenplays?

I'm glad your life is mostly great but I can assure you lives like the ones portrayed are all too common - an unending stream of violence, alcoholism, ill health, rage, despair and hopelessness. Your belief that people stuck in this world have some control over it shows a deep naivety bordering on the contempt that the comfortably well off have for those they perceive to be beneath them.

Joseph WAS trying to change his life but what options does he have? Too old and undereducated and mentally frail to get a decent job, no money, no real friends or family to fall back on, no proper help for his mental health issues. So what is he supposed to do to improve his life?

His options are so limited as to be non existant.

That's a feckin' jazz haircut!
