He is what he is.
Probably grew up poor with a father who was a massive drinker, probably watched his mother get knocked around. Did his best to get on with life but with nowhere to go or turn to he just ended up following the same path as so many other people around him did.
The only saving grace was that he recognised his faults and tried to change them, he never made any excuses or turned to God. He placed everything on himself and knew that he was the one that had to change.
