What's up with British cinema?

*English is not my primary langage.

I am from Quebec, Canada and I must say that all the great dark, strong and independant dramas I watched the last few years came from England.

Tyrannosaur
Dead Man's Shoes
Kill list
London to Brighton
And that movie very similar to straw dogs, but I am not sure if it was British...

Pretty much like the french horror wave (Martyrs, Haute tension, Inside, Ils), British movies seems now like the reference for dark dramas.

Any suggestions for me, regarding similar British movies? Don't get me start on the British comedy/horror type (hated Severance, Shawn of the dead and other DogHouse).

Thanks ;)

Watch Eden Lake.

You'll never want to visit England.

Saw it, very decent. But France has a slight edge over you guys regarding horror (sorry about that :P, I'm from Canada btw).

That movie fücking ruined me. I've seen pretty much every shock film or extreme film there is, but the end of Eden Lake really stuck with me. I haven't brought myself to watch it again. Maybe some day lol.

Also check out Ratcatcher, and maybe the Red Riding trilogy.

Yeah I agree, definitely try Ratcatcher. A good wee Scottish one.

Also try Scum, Ladybird Ladybird, and The War Zone.

Ok, I'll go for the warzone now.

If you haven't seen 'Shallow Grave' or 'Trainspotting', they are both excellent.

that film is def in my top five most disturbing movies, ew, very good but never again. i think because it was so rooted in british culture it hit a little closer to home than if it had been french, or american

Yeah Mum and Dad was great :D

I think it's a reflection of a certain segment of life in the UK. It makes for cathartic viewing, that being said, I don't think I could watch films like Nil By Mouth, This is England and Tyrannosaur more than once.

A Room for Romeo Brass; Some Voices; I'll Sleep When I'm Dead; Croupier;
Gangster No. 1; Sexy Beast

All brilliant gritty UK set films

Almost anything done by Director Mike Leigh is a safe bet for a good British film, especially Secrets & Lies. And I agree with other posters, This is England and Nil by Mouth are fantastic. Director Shane Meadows is another good bet (This is England, Dead Mans Shoes) Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, Somers Town, both good.
