Why didn't he (spoiler)

Why didnt he take the blame?
I'm usually pretty good at guessing endings, but I was wrong here.
Why didnt he claim to have killed her husband? Didn't she deserve to be free after the abuse she suffered? And what did he have to lose?

It's in the same spirit of the rest of the movie, and that is that life isn't always what we WANT things to be, it is was what could have been.

I'm not a freak. No I'm not.

She was only awaiting trial, which means she probably got off with a slap on the wrist.

Murder is murder in the UK. It doesn't matter what the reason for the crime!

2 Brippy Smuppers: Can I ask a question?

What if, not JUST in Britain, but EVERYWHERE in the world, the murder of bad people, whether in self-defense or revenge, was allowed by law BECAUSE the majority of people agreed with it, would that really make the world a better place?

And say if our laws ceased to exist in the official way that they do, and people were allowed to police themselves, what would be the advantages and disadvantages of such an idea?

And could - not necessarily just in Britain, but also in the world, people REALLY create the kind of laws that suit everyone (who is good - that is) so that no-one who is good themselves ever complains, or is that a totally impossible make believe task?

And do you think that you and anyone else for that matter can answer the question logically and rationally rather than simply emotionally?

P.S. In all matters related to law - must we ALWAYS like divide ourselves in terms of nationality as opposed to what species we are?

I agree. In the UK she would probably claim self defence and no jury after listening to evidence (multiple trips to hospital the whole glass to her insides) as well as her testimony of anything else he did would convict her. As you say this is probably her waiting for trial which can take months depending on the case. But I agree he could have taken the blame but it was a great thing to end on.

Yeah, I think she could get off on self-defence or diminished responsibility on the basis of the torture he had inflicted on her.. She would probably get in trouble for not reporting his death though and would maybe serve some jail time.

I didn't think he should take the blame for her - I don't think it was in keeping with his character, we know that although he generally has a good heart, he's done some awful things and isn't really a 'good' person..

I was hoping that it wasn't her.. That he'd upset someone else who killed him. I was hoping that she would live happily ever after.. Maybe she will do in time - she certainly seemed more upbeat and calm at the end of the film.

You obviously don't know what you're talking about. How is it murder if she was being rped and attacked? As a law student she had two defences. One of not being in the right mind from the regular abuse, and for self defence.

You have to have the mens rea/intention for murder and if she was being rped and attacked she was acting in self defence.

I don't understand why her husband wasn't in jail if he put glass inside her so she couldn't have children. She must have had medical help. You can't put something like that down to falling in bath, and police can prosecute a partner for abuse if the other one drops the charges

@Minimize

I don't think so. Remember she states that no one would believe her because they thought he was a saint and that he could turn on the charm.

Having worked with victims of domestic violence (in the US) I came across cases like that. To the community, the abuser is the "perfect" spouse and upright citizen and everyone is shocked and disbelieving that they would do such a thing. It must have been provoked. Plus the charming abuser tends to paint the abused as unbalanced and not to be believed. Isolated and frightened, the abused is rarely seen in public except in circumstances controlled by the abusive partner. Told repeatedly that "I will kill you if you try to leave me" they believe it and feel trapped and alone. ("I fell", "I walked into a door", "I am so clumsy" are the usual reasons given if the ever even seek medical attention.)

There are lots of them in prison serving long terms after they finally snap, and the inevitable happens. Our laws rarely can protect them, but definitely can punish them.
