It sure wasn't the same without Sean Astin. I wonder how the series will be with Stockard Channing? I'm not crazy about that idea, but at least Channing ISN'T Goldberg. Goldberg was terrible.

Actually while Sean Astin would have been better I think Whoopi Goldbery did a really good job with what she was given...her narration was one of the very few good points of the movie...I hate her name, Whoopi makes me think of a Whoopi Cushion but I admire her acting skills...and narration is a lot harder than people make it out to be...You try to sound excited when you're just standing in front of a microphone or show sadness...half the time they aren't even seeing the footage while they record...its put together by computers...

Yes, narration is hard, which is why it's important to choose someone who can do it well. My guess is that Whoopi was chosen because she is a fan of the show and a Big Name. But those should not be the qualifications. You need someone with good diction who can express both the joys and the sorrows without overwhelming what is going on on the screen.
It's as delicate a task as scoring a movie. The right soundtrack can emphasize and enhance the emotional impact of what you are seeing. A bad soundtrack will just distract and detract.
I agree with those of you who say that Whoopi Goldberg did a bad job of narrating Meerkat Manor: The Story Begins. I have the DVD and I have to keep turning the sound up and down all the time, at some stages of the film Whoopi talks in a clear voice but then she starts lowering he voice so you can hardly hear her. I agree with the person who said that she narrates the film like it was for a six year old. Don't get me wrong, Whoopi is a good actress but she is just no good as a narrator.
They should have got Bill Nighy to narrate the film because he did such an excellent job in narrating the MM series.
It took me a minute to realize it was Whoopi. I'm to the first commercial, and I'm already disappointed. It's being far too sappy and romanticized. These are animals, there is no "realization of specialness" and all that crap. Yes the animal kingdom can determine dominate ones but this storyline so far is just dumb.
