Well, goodbye for real then I guess...

So, for some reason, IMDb is shutting down their message boards in a few weeks. They seem to their their Twitter account and Facebook page is actually a good alternative, which I don't. So, goodbye to all my fellow Harry Potter fans!

It's been interesting for sure lol. There's been some great conversations here, some not so great, and some downright stupid conversations. But as bad as any have been, I'd personally gladly welcome them if it meant also having the great ones too, but IMDb feels differently, and they pay the bills, so what can you do?

Take care all! This was one of the last discussion boards I actually visit anymore (IMDb as a whole, not just the HP sections), as there really IS nothing 'social' about Social Media.

Damn. This kind of sucks. I HATE Social Media.

Take care all! We got 2 weeks left!!

I agree Facebook and Twitter don't lend themselves to conversation the way these boards do. I'll really miss these boards. Nothing like throwing the baby out with the bathwater but I guess they were getting too many complaints.

I've enjoyed talking with you here.

Same here teatat! I absolutely love talking to other HP fans, and so far, I do not know of a single (active) place where this can happen...

I saw this post in another board, about an online petition to change their minds. I don't believe in online petitions at all, but figured I'd share it just in case. I'm hoping that maybe they WILL change their minds if there's enough of a backlash:

I've also tweeted at IMDb, and posted on their FB page. I also unliked and unfollowed their FB page. May be meaningless, but figured there's a shot..

This was the only good part of imdb. The main sites with the cast info is really not impressive, or not enough to visit the individual sites. There are better places to look up information such as wikipedia or the individual movie's wikipedia pages or even the fan supported wikia pages for the individual shows.

In short, imdb is redundant without the message forums.

I agree.

Don't get me wrong, when I hear about a possible new movie, or when I watch something older and think that that guy in an episode of SOAP is Fat Tony on Simpsons, who went on to play David Rossi on Criminal Minds, then IMDb is the first place I will go to find out.

For the record, that was a true story, except that my wife was the one who noticed that. I was cooking at that point and wasn't paying attention. However...

Without the boards, I think that I will end up just googling any question instead, because without the boards, I won't be coming to IMDb without having a specific question in mind. I come to IMDb every day to see what's going on on the BOARDS, not any other part of the entire site. The boards are what keep me coming back, nothing else.

I think that I will have to post that elsewhere now and then...

Anyway, A_Bob, it has been a real pleasure chatting with you here on these boards. I really will miss that, because I don't think IMDb will reverse this decision.

I agree the boards were the reason to come here.

I've enjoyed your posts.

With any luck, once the hits to their pages drop dramatically they'll realize their mistake and reactivate the boards.

I had hoped that might happen as well. But I wonder if by the time they realize that (if they do), will it be too late? Will people have just forgotten and moved on by then?

I honestly don't think this site will have a huge appeal for me once the boards are gone. What will even be the point of having an account once the boards are gone? I know that I myself only signed up in the first place because I wanted to take part in the discussions that were going on back then.

For now, I guess only time will tell.

There's always this: http://imdb2.freeforums.net/

Sadly, your prediction is quite accurate. I was around since '05, and the HP boards were full of great posters. Plenty of discussions on the books and movies, with a fair share of fun nonsense threads sprinkled in.

That ended around '06.

Something happened where threads all across IMDb were getting deleted. We never learned what really happened. Was it trolls abusing the report feature? Was it a power mad moderator deleting any thread he or she wished? Was it something else? Whatever the case, many posters fled. Some went to runboard. Some just went away. Eventually the boards stabilized, but the damage had been done. A few of us came back, but most were gone for good. The HP boards recovered somewhat, but it hasn't felt the same to me since. Even that community disbanded after the movies had all been released.

So yes, even if IMDb later decides to bring the boards back, most will likely never return.

This is a shame. I've been on for over 16 years, so I'll really miss this.

New account was created in 2009, but I've been on the boards since the CoS days... A sad state of affairs when IMDB decides to shut down the main reason why I visit their site... I wish you all fair fortune and remember: “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”
