IIRC, it was a design originally from the Codex that Leonardo then constructs? That would mean it's one of Altaïr's many modifications and technological advancements, which kinda gives Ezio official sanction to go gun people down.
Anyway, there are times when a bullet or a crossbow is a far more efficient way of knocking off your man (or woman), depending on your circumstances. If in any doubt, watch Raiders Of The Lost Ark and ask Indiana Jones!
As a real-life practicing swordsman myself, I'm a big fan of reminding my fellow students: "He who lives by the sword will be shot by those who don't"! :-)
Ezio is not a knight or a samurai or anything else that has some sort of honour code about fighting fair. He is an Assassin. His job is to kill, in whatever fashion works best. Fist, poison, blade, bullet, arrow, bolt, cannon, tank, 3-storey drop, headbutt... You know the three tenets of the Assassin's Creed.

The only time i used the gun was when i had to kill the new Doge from a distance. other than that - air double stabs are teh win.
