Assassin's Creed II almost a perfect game (except for the GAMEPLAY)

*sigh*............

-Combat sucks. Essentially it comes down to waiting 10+ seconds for someone to attack so you can counter-attack or attack them and hit their sword for 5 times before their health depletes. And it's sloooooooooooooooooooooooooooooow. God damn, it might as well be a random encounter on Final Fantasy x_x.

-Controls are frustrating. I want to leap onto a nearby ledge so that I can pull a guard off onto the ground below and die. Instead, I end up jumping out and away from the wall....falling to the ground below and die.

-Whenever I buy "Assassin's Creed" I usually expect more assassinations and less "Follow me!" "Race these people!" "TIME LIMIT OMGZ, QUICKLY FIND YOUR OBJECTIVE, WE MADE IT TRANSLUCENT ON THE GRID SO THAT IT WILL FADE INTO THE VAGUE SHAPES ON YOUR RIGHT HAND MAP THERE ON THE HUD FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE!!1!!" .

-Good thing I spent that whole game collecting and buying all of that expensive armor, weapons, and fighting skills. That last boss fight really implements so many weapons and styles in order to beat the villain... (It's not a spoiler, it's a service announcement to anyone wanting to spend 60 dollars.)

-Replay value: Worthless. Those long cutscenes were neat the first go around but wading through them again is meaningless if you just want to pick it up and play. 4 minutes of back-and-forth dialogue I can recite at this point and I'm eyeing Rock Band or Arkham Asylum.

-How- HOW THE HELL- are you going to make a stealth-based game and NOT ADD A *beep* SNEAK BUTTON?!!?!?!!? "But you have the hide-in-plain-sight option" A lot of goddam good it does me on a roof where someone off-screen can snipe me onto the ground, someone below me can call his buddies to gangrape me before I know where they're coming from, or *my favorite* the brilliant feature where you have to walk VERY FAAAAAST up behind a guard who will most like turn and see you by the time you walk over to him, but if you I DUNNO do the sensible thing and RUSH HIM he will hear you and alert the other guards right as you kill him thus exposing your location and we begin this *beep* all over again with what might as well be turn-based combat.

Assassin's Creed is a beautiful game, I love the premise, I love the story, but I really want my 60 dollars back.

That's why in the training session they teach you how to use the "TAUNT" button.

It's up to you whether you want to follow people, race, etc... Unless you're not refering to the side missions and you're complaining about the main story. If that's the case then gtfo. People were complaining how repetative AC1 was and now you get to do more than 10 assassinations, any way you choose. Plus they added more stuff to the main story so it won't get repetative
-hi
-go kill him
-ok.

-done
-good

-hi
-kill that guy
-ok

-done...

Have you ever tried to spot a guy in the crowd? What about a guy, alone, climbing a wall? You can't just hit the stealth button you know. You're supposed to use conventional ways. It's more realistic.

Oh hello extremely cheap DLC with the missing sequences.

I never had any sort of control problem... maybe you're just not good.

.....The Y or Triangle button is a Taunt....../facepalm

Honestly after reading that... I know you beat the game... but you probably did a terrible job getting there.

The combat gives what you put into it. If you mindlessly hold your finger on the counter button and wait for an enemy to attack then yes, it is unrewarding... If you're good at the game you can dispatch a group of 5 guards before they even realise you've killed them, avoiding any unessecary open combat.

The free running system is damn near perfect if you are jumping away from a wall its because that's what you're telling it to do... The controls are 360 degree specific and it only does what you tell it to do. Try being less retarded, it might work.

Whenever I buy "Assassin's Creed" I usually expect more assassinations and less "Follow me!" "Race these people!" This had more assassinations the first game, pay attention. The first game was criticised for its distinct lack of variety, the makers were answering to the faults of the first game and have done an asdtonishing job of spicing the gameplay up. If its a game of assassinations you're after, i'd recommend Tenchu Z.

Thats absurd, you don't collect items in any game solely for the final boss... you collect them in order for your character to evolve with the difficulty curve of the game ie: the guards take more punishment and are better armed in Venice than in Tuscanny. Thus, you need stronger weapons and more robust armour to even the playing field... You're just firing sh!t by this stage of your post, you've run out of argument.

Well, i'm on my second time round and loving it.

Sneak buttons are for games where you are infiltrating ie: Metal Gear Solid, you're in areas you're not supposed to be in. AC:2 is city, and you're mingling with public. Thats the whole point is that you "hide in plain sight" you kill your target and disappear into the crowd. this was a selling point for the game... Guess you missed it. In terms of your gripes i can confirm that...

1. I've never been shot off a roof by an archer, not once.
2. I've never been attacked from the ground up and if i had i'd notice that i'd been seen and run for cover
3. I've never had aguard notice me when i've snuck up behind for a kill
4. I've never had trouble rushing guards, so long as you attack fast you avoid being discovered by other guards.

+ + +

To summarise, you're points all seem to suggest that you just can't play the game porperly rather than any apparent defect within the games design itself...

If you can't manage this, i'd stay away from Arkham Asylum, especially if you're planning on playing it on any other difficulty than Easy.

- Quietly beautiful, like a turd in a lake.

I think he was being sarcastic, criticizing how easy the FINAL boss is...

It's not gambling when you know you're gonna win. Counting cards is a foolproof system.

I had a lot of complaints regarding AC1. However, I almost entirely disagree with you in AC2. My biggest complaint was their habit (which they brought over from AC1) of using the same button to do contradicting or awkward things. Circle button to grab during a freefall, or let go while hanging. R1 button to run and climb walls, so you have to avoid pressing in the direction of the wall if you also want to run, or you end up auto-climbing when you didn't mean to.

Otherwise, I thought the game was great. Great story, great combat (some of the best melee combat in a game IMO), and plenty of enjoyable content. I liked the mini games (races, collections, etc...) for a nice break from the story. Since most of them were optional, you could've just skipped them.

reply

I totally agree with your post ja431. I think it's ridiculous to have to go into retarded tombs and wall walk all over the place. I'd rather have some boss fights instead of frickin puzzles. Hurry pull the lever or you have to go back to the beginning of the tomb and pull it again.I enjoy the story very much but I don't give a damn about puzzles and races. I have beaten the game twice now and I have to agree that they need to give us a skip feature that will let us skip the scenes.

reply

you guys are complaining about 4 minute scenes? Man it's sad you'll never know the greatness of a metal gear solid game. Oh, and for archers or up to two enemies, if they see you for a split second before the hidden blade is in their head they don't alert anyone anyway so what's the difference?

Can't keep me off this escalator!

If you think the combat sucks, you're obviously too young to remember games like Golden Axe or Double Dragon. The gameplay on these games is limited to tapping the attack button over and over, and using magic once in a while.

Ezio has a number of different counter kill moves, depending on how the opponent attacks, or the position you are in when countering. That's superior action in my opinion. You are totally ignorant to the change in gameplay when facing Brutes or Seekers. I spent one night just training in sidesteps and evading maneuvers. My dream would be a mix of Tekken and Assassin's Creed gameplay.

I had the same problem with jumping from ledges, but I learned a tremendous amount from the first Assassin's tomb mission. After that, I learned to stop mashing the controller, and use finesse. I typically made mistakes such as, jumping and hitting the grab button too late (or unnecessarily) and dropping instead.

You really have to be fair and base your opinion on the whole game, not just the parts that frustrated you the most. I just started playing the game last week, and I'm blown away. I've always been a huge fan of the sandbox style of games, especially Grand Theft Auto. Assassin's Creed is a sophisticated game in the spirit of GTA. I'm a history buff, so I love to read about the people and places. I just hope kids can enjoy the sophistication and creative intelligence that went into the game. Sometimes, as the OP demonstrates, we put things on a pedestal with unreasonably high expectations, so there's nowhere but down.

These are for you McNulty!

reply

Where do you classify, in the douche guys or the trolls crap?

reply

I don't understand why you guys are defending the controls. You basically have to buttons for everything. You can never be sure what Ezio will do next. Will he jump where I want him to or maybe leap into his death? Will he start climbing here or just run down and fall? And putting sprinting and climbing on the same button? WTF?

The moves you can do in the game are great, but you have too little control over what you do. Sure, if you know the game engine in and out you he does exactly what he's supposed to, but the controls could have been so much easier. I missed the PoP controls the whole time. PoP might be harder, but with more than a single "do anything" button you could actually do what you were trying to.

The fight system feels really awkward with all the guards circling around you and just watching. The counters look great, but that's about it. The fights look unnatural and don't take a lot of skill.

Many other small flaws in the game. Unlike the OP I still thinks it is one of the best games I have ever played. Sadly it had some very annoying flaws that could have been avoided.

reply

I agree with the OP about the controls and the replay value (but most of the games I really enjoyed had very little replay value).

Having said that, I still think Assassin's Creed 2 is an awesome game, and I would still recommend it to anyone!

reply

The controls on a PC is excelent though.
Except one which is REALLY anoying.. The part where you have to follow this unknown assassin up a tower.. its in a bleeding effect part. once youre on a balcon facing a closed door you have to get up on a ledge.. its low and just above Ezios head but its dead hard to get ahold of.

reply

Yes the altair tower climb was so dang obnoxious. Ended up having to walk on the ledge to be right under it and jump straight up because he wouldn't wall run or grab onto it from jumping to the side >.>
