Is Kratos a bad guy?

I saw this question on a forum and it got my attention.

What do you guys think?

After reading the replies to this question,I came to a startling conclusion.

There are no "good guys" in this game!!!

This game is about a bunch of bad guys all trying to kill each other!!!

Anti-hero is the term.

He isn't the bad guy. He just feels wronged and retaliates like Rambo lol
He is tortured in my opinion. The overall goal is not to kill Zeus or get revenge on the Gods. He just wants to see his family again.

So he wants to die?
Considering all the things he's done,he would most probably end up in the Underworld.Since his wife and daughter would be in the Fields of Elysium,it's doubtful that he would ever see them again.

I'm guessing that's where the next game will take place.Since Hades is dead, someone else would have taken over the Underworld,I'm guessing that it might be his brother.

That's what I was thinking. It would more or less be a battle between him and his brother with his family somehow being tied in.

Rambo only injured the people who wouldnt leave him alone. Kratos brutally murders millions of people 99.99% of which never wronged him.

God of War I felt like an epic adventure-fantasy tale.
Something like Conan the Barbarian, only a tad more violent. Kratos was a guy like Maximus from Gladiator. He was brutal, but he still was very likable. When he got to his revenge you couldn't help but cheer for him. The game felt more like an adventure-tale than an extreme tale of vengeance.

God of War II became a bit darker and a lot more epic. Everything from the boss-fights to the world you were playing through felt like God of War I times 10. Kratos became again a little more brutal than he already was, but you still felt for him.
This second game still also felt more like an adventure-tale.

now.
I think the last game is kind of an outsider. It stays true to its roots but it takes it in a whole other extreme direction.

God of War III is hideously dark. The journey feels a lot less epic than it does in the first two games, but the boss-battles are on a scale that even overthrows the fights in The Lord of the Rings-series. At times it more like felt to me like a 'Last House on the Left'-revenge tale set in the grand God of War-universe with kill scenes you more expect to see in a film like Cannibal Holocaust. Kratos has become such a psychotic, revenge-driven Rambo that maims and tears apart everything...and I do mean EVERYTHING that stands in his way. You begin to feel sorry for his victims at one point ( the guys deserved it, but boy they got it the harsh way).

I can perfectly view the last part as a standalone game.

I hear you brother,I've always considered God of War 2 to be the best out of the three.

I don't understand why people are using the term "antihero" to refer to Kratos. An antihero is a person who performs heroic acts, but doesn't fit the profile of what a hero should be.

Kratos doesn't do anything heroic.Everything he does is what's best for HIM and he doesn't care about what anybody else wants. He SURE as hell doesn't give a crap about who he hurts in the process!!!

He's just selfish and evil.

Zeus just wants to maintain order. What's what the Gods of Olympus do,they maintain order and keep the world safe.

Kratos is basically killing the people who are keeping humanity safe and the world in order.

That's why I came up with the idea for a new edition of God of War III titled "God of War:Olympus Edition",in which you play as the Gods of Olympus and battle Kratos and the Titans.

Chronologically speaking,Kratos would be the first person(or boss)that you would kill in the game.I say this because you would start the game playing as Poseidon.

So what do you think?I was thinking of emailing Santa Monica Studios with this idea.Do you think they'll go for it?

There IS a game coming out in late 2013 called "God of War:Rival of Sparta" which has playable levels in which you can play as Zeus.

Kratos is a monster, nothing more to be said. I love this game but I dislike some of the things you have to do (some are just too immoral for me).

As for playing with the gods, that would be cool!

Villain protagonist.

There's alot of games out there that won't challenge your moral issues. Try Little Big Planet.

Very funny.

(spoilers)

Kratos comes around at the end of GOW 3. And I wouldn't say the Gods of Olympus were good. They were mostly the same level of selfish as Kratos, punishing or rewarding humanity on a whim. For better or worse, Kratos made "us" free to make our own mistakes under our own terms. Oh, and the whole releasing redemption thing for humanity was pretty heroic.

They made him extremely unlikeable in 3. They should have pulled back a bit.

Revenge is a dish best served cold...

He is a bad guy, so are the Titans, and so are the Gods.

But apparently the Gods had some kind of excuse, because they received some of the evil from Pandora's box recently.

The "anti-hero" definition is not totally inappropriate, because he has an heroic act has his main goal - to get revenge on the main villain, Zeus - and the foul acts he does on the way are the collaterals.
However, these side foul actions are so mean and evil, he always has to be defined as a bad and evil guy.
He kills random people running in the street. He takes a random, helpless woman, and uses her body to clog wheels, killing her violently in the process.
Burns Apolo alive without even blinking.
And many other things.

He is very unlikable in this God of War 3.
