Here's the REAL reason the final was the way it was...

This series was a satire to the whole superstitious nonsense of destiny/prophecy and so on. It is all about interpreting events based on unproven belief systems, reading meaning into things that aren't there, flattering to produce inflated egos, creating delusion. People waste their lives in a deception of false hope that goes nowhere. That is what the finale was really all about, it exposed all that destiny/prophecies/old religion mumbo jumbo for the fraud that it is. The dragon was just talking crap the whole time.

Or maybe Guinevere was never changed back from being evil, and she orchestrated the whole thing, to become Queen. Just another cynical take on it.

Nope. Of course, it was what it seemed to be. I loved it, don't take that away!!! :)

In The Bible, the dragon = satan. Merlin's deception began from listening to the flattering lies of the dragon. It was imprisoned for a reason. When it got free in the first episode of season 3, it went on a rage and nearly killed Arthur right there and then. That should have been the giveaway.

Ok, the satan-comparison might be a bit to strong in this case, but yes, after i rewatched the series some time ago, i thought that the dragon was the real main villain. He wanted Uther dead (ok, he was quite honest about that part), but i think he also wanted revenge on Uther's siblings and those that were dear to him. He gave Merlin some at least questionable advice on some occasions, he nearly killed Arthur directly, and he kept Merlin from helping Morgana at a time were offering her assistance would likely have prevented her from becoming all-out evil.
In my opinion, he wanted Uther's children to fight and kill each other.

^j^ I believe in Zara Young! ^j^
