What happened? (spoilers)

I came in here planning to ask if the series ever picked up in its five seasons (having lost interest shortly after starting season 2), but taking a look at all of the "The ending ruined my life!" threads gives me the impression that the writers decided to tread water for five years and then abruptly kill all of the characters and end the story on a dour note out of some petty resentment for the cast not wanting to stick around for season 6.

So my question is...why the hell didn't they do something with the story before season 6? There was so much potential in this series, but as I began to move through it became increasingly obvious that the writers were afraid to change up the formula or advance the story or character relationships in a meaningful way. And sure enough, all the way until the final season they seem to be writing the very same silly idiot plots where Arthur gets knocked out so Merlin can Merlin, or Merlin hides behind a stump and secretly magicks at some problems. Then everyone dies and it's the future and the audience can screw.

Why didn't this show ever go anywhere? Why did it stick the same boring formula and refuse to embrace the stuff of Arthurian legend that people actually wanted to see? I keep reading, "Season 6 would have been great!". That seems like a cop out, to me. Why couldn't the previous five have been great? You can't hold the same note for five seasons and then say "Well, I was going to change it up but you stopped me!".

Considering you readily acknowledge that you didn't watch past the beginning of season 2, assuming that it never picked up or that it never went anywhere is kind of a broad assumption, don't you think?

It was a good ending and a good series. People apparently just wanted something different. Personally my favourite season as a whole is the third. But if you couldn't make it through season two, then perhaps Merlin just isn't fore you...

reply

And BTW they always planned to make five seasons. So they got to end the shoe how they wanted.

I see people talking about just killing off characters at the end. But, in most tellings of the legend, Arthur is killed by Mordred. He does die, obviously. So, having the series end with Arthur's death seems logical to me, too.

Some people didn't like and/or understand the ending. I love the shows that step out of the comfort zone of a "happily ever after" ending.
You quit watching just before it gets really going. The first season and about halfway into the second are really very silly for the most part. About halfway into the second it takes a rather dark turn. It continues with comedy in most episodes, but not so campy. The dark turn is when it becomes truly addicting. I've watched the series 3 times in probably 5 years.

I didn't get past the first season. This show is dire. If they broke formula and took a risk in the finale as you describe, I would actually respect it more. It would still be too little, too late; they were going for bland, repetitive nonsense.

(And no, I didn't like Game of Thrones, either).

Lol why bring Game of Thrones into this? How does it connect to a show like Merlin? They're entirely different in tone, narrative, target-audience...
