Is anyone still feeling really down about the finale?

Lol pathetic I know. I am still feeling down. I don't think I've ever felt sad about a tv, movie, or book series before. I genuinely can't even go back and watch it knowing how it ends. It's just too sad.

reply

I thought it was horrible for poor Arthur to be dragged around like an old dog - very undignified and a crap ending.

I absolutely know how you feel! For the past couple of weeks I've been watching Merlin on Netflix and has stopped midway because I knew that the series finale would air on BBC. I told myself that I'll watch it again and again if the ending is fulfilled with Albion getting created, magic being restored, etc... After finding out how it ended --on Christmas Eve no less, I was absolutely bummed out. It's silly to be so sad about a show, but I am incredibly sad. I guess that shows credit to the actors because they really made it come alive for me. I am terribly disappointed with how it ended. I knew how it ended in the legends, but this series wasn't really about that. This series was about Albion, magic getting restored, and Arthur eventually finding out about Merlin's magic. As a matter of fact, the one thing I was worried about was which knight will survive this battle because I keep telling myself -- "they can't kill off Arthur --magic isn't back in the land yet, Albion wasn't created yet, and Merlin hasn't fulfilled his destiny..." I was like --will Sir Leon or Sir Gwaine die? (I didn't think they would've killed off Sir Percival since the emotional effect would not have been the same with Leon or Gwaine. But yeah, basically I know how you feel and I am sad.

reply

Yes I feel exactly the same, worst ending of a series ever

reply

yeah considering how fun and upbeat the rest of the series was. And how arthur was basically being groomed to be the perfect king. and him finding out that merlin had magic was the perfect way for him to start to truly trust magic and its users.

it had all the workings and build up for a nice solid happy ending. But instead of giving us a happy ending with a few sad prices, the writers completely dumped all over us and gave us squat.

reply

Yes, yes the ending is very frustrating. Both my 11yr daughter and I were upset with the ending. I hope they will continue the series and round it up in a more meaningful way.

reply

The show was very loosely based on the legend. Arthur is the ONCE AND FUTURE KING, key is future. In the legend we know he dies by Mordred s "hand". Same legend "talks" about Albion, thing is Albion has not yet happened, and so that future has yet to come.

I personally think the legend (other legends too) has/have some world truths, so am glad they did not try and do an Albion follow up, as in that same legend, there really in not much said about it "happening", so making it up, well just me as some past legends/stories and more have some truths in them.

Be nice to take some of the silly Hollywood movies and tv shows too, as the movies are a continuation of couple tv shows, the whole of Star Trek from the original to TNG and more, to the Star Trek movies, then Independence Day to the 20 yrs later Independence Day...yes there are more examples, but the basic is that human kind is equal (ok in the ST stuff there is the whole exploring of and wanting to get along in general do but still...), but Independence Day, both movies, with the second really showing, us, humans the world UNITED, living more or less in peace, even if we/they the humans dont agree or see things the same, they did not go out to deliberately hurt and kill because of whatever stupid reasons. Those who are determined to mainly kill if you do not do and say and act as dictated to, these things do show it could be possible, to just call ourselves the human race...maybe if the world was actually blind, wonder then what some would find to hate, could type more, but already wordy and yes know my editing skills are horrid.

So yes, we cried here too, my now 42yr self, my 28yr son, (ok he did manage to hold in), and almost 24yr daughter did shed a tear too. Were upset with ending, and neighbors daughters who I got them hooked on watching with their mom, they just turned 11 and 13, well after also wondering why, we discussed all including my thinking that Albion has yet to happen, and even though wished was different ending, after learning more about the legend, at least understood and more or less agree that Albion will have to come, though one, maybe both, hope that the guy who played Arthur, BJ (as he is just so cute) and the one who played Merlin, CM, (was just so good playing him and also cute), least that is what they think should happen if Merlin could be. Did not have the heart to tell them no modern legend, guess that is why Albion has yet to be. They do enjoy re watching, I do too.

Live life to be alive...and may your day be well or find one thing that gives you that little extra, even just a 😄

You have a knack for rambling ill give you that.

reply

Exactly! The actors did a great job with the series. They brought in their own personalities to it and even relationship. Arthur/bradley are good hearted 'prats'. Merlin/colin are shy and talented. Gwen/angel are talented and supportive. Morgana/katie have that slight dark edge. And so on .They were all friends in the show and it really brought the series alive. Sigh.

reply

I know it's a tv show and they're fictional characters, but, I'm surprised by how much I've become attached to these characters. They're like old friends and it was such an horrible ending. I still can't stop thinking about it now and it's just so utterly depressing. Not just Arthur's death at such a young age without achieving what he was supposed to, but, Gwaine's death, poor Merlin wandering alone for thousands of years, Gwen ruling alone the Kingdom that should have been Arthur's and cheapening Arthur's character. I was rewatching series 1, but, I can't bear to look at it now. Heartbreaking

reply

I know! I was thinking about how ppl wanted a spin off of merlin and arthur in the future, but its depressing bc everyone else is dead. They all have are a piece in the puzzle that makes the show. So sad.

reply

I agree that this was a dreadful ending and the show did not deliver on any of the promises made during 5 seasons: * we did not really get to see Merlin using his Magic in front of Arthur * we did not get to see the golden age of Albion/Camelot * we didn't see magic restored to the kingdom. Please check out this article :Why do so many mourn the death of Arthur? http://www.merlin-arthur.com/hello-world/ We are trying to create a strong community before going to the creators/actors to ask for a re-write. Seriously. And I have never done anything like this before either! This is about more than the end of a TV show.. this is about the end of a TV show that showed different values than most do.

I was so sad watching the final episode,i too thought they could have had a better ending, one that allows the characters to come back in the future.I love this show but they maybe they could do a future show with Arthur having a son and Merlin coming back to protect him.( I can only hope).
A devoted fan

Yep, I'm still rather depressed about it. It truly was a slap to all of the dedicated fans of the series. Even after the storylines got repetitive, I still loved it no less. Very heartbreaking ending after experiencing and loving these characters for 5 years.

I miss it.

I'm not feeling down but I still come on here to speak my mind and express how crappy I think the writing is. So I guess I still haven't processed it yet either. :)

I feel more angry than sad, though, but just like you I really don't feel like watching any of this ever again.

It's weird how I got invested in that show. Usually when I don't like a show (anymore) I just stop watching it. Sometimes I watch a show I like and notice that the writing had flaws, but then I just think "This week the writing wasn't that great. Oh well!". If the writing stays bad on a regular basis, I just stop watching and forget about it. I don't know why in the case of Merlin I got so attached to the show and so mad at the writers for ruining it. :)

reply

This may sound like hyperbole, but the finale kind of ruined the show for me. I felt like I've been watching for 4 years for nothing. I was expecting this big payoff in the last episode and we never got it.

reply

The episode was fine except Arther dying in it. It should have gone on like it did except had Merlin magically slap around Morgana. But Arther should have been saved by the Dragon as its final act in this world on Avalon, with the episode ending with Merlin and Arther walking towards Camelot as equals and friends with arther in on the secret of Merlin's Magic.

After the end of the series the legalisation of magic and the golden age could then happen off screen.

reply

I am beyond sad. Angry that the show I invested so much time into ended so poorly. They ruined the experience for me, just like the writers of Robin Hood did when they ruined the show at the end of season two. I am reluctant to watch anything else from the BBC now besides Doctor Who. =(

reply

FULLY agree, mourningwillows. however, BBC also RUINED AND DESTROYED downton abbey in its series finale as well. literally burned the show to the ground. how the BBC could have allowed that - it would have been more just to END downton abbey altogether on a high note. clearly the BBC top execs are all in on some kind of insane drug trip and completely out of touch with reality. if it wasn't for the surprising revival of Doctor Who with the wonderful tease about his exciting new companion, i would say the BBC needs to end as a station. what with the scandal of the entire news unit ignoring/condoning a major pedophile and putting him on tv as a news anchor, then destroying two of its most popular series on Christmas Day, they've had a particularly bad year.

reply

You do realize that Downton Abbey is on ITV, right? :)

reply

no - I did not. still, British television people must despise Xmas, and since they seem to be Xtian themselves, they are self-hating miserable people. Doctor Who was so great, though, it almost redeems them for the garbage they foisted on the world just now.

reply

Maybe SPOILERS for other shows ...................... There was an amusing letter in the Radio Times about how depressing Christmas television was with Merlin, Downton Abbey, Dup in Wild at Heart, Clara in Doctor Who and the death's in Eastenders and Emmerdale. What a devastating Christmas for fictional characters

i watched the whole thing streaming online. never saw the breaks and don't have tv.

If you hate your life so much that you are driven to hide behind a computer screen and hurl abuse you really need to take a long hard look in the mirror. Change your life. If you don't like your life then change it. You live in the Western world. Its easy to find the life you want to live.

i agree that one should change their life if he/she is unhappy - like you, spewing such hatred. look in the mirror. i wish you to find happiness. i am sad for you.

reply

Oh the Downton Abbey season finale pissed me off to no end! I understand why they did it to a certain point, but they could have sent Matthew away on business and had Dan Stevens guest star during his breaks on Broadway!

reply

obviously they SHOULD have done that. the only reason i can imagine why they wouldn't is if dan refused to come back at all, even on occasion. if he did NOT refuse, the show creator must enjoy killing off characters for the heck of it.

reply

i do like your idea, badwolf. i am going to try to imagine it ended this way and be less angry about the whole fiasco!
