Muhammad married a six year old?
I read that Muhammad married a six year old girl and consummated his marriage with her when she was 9 and he was 54?
Is this story true or is it a lie created to discredit Islam?
her name was aisha, and her age ranges from 6 to 12, depending on the historian (six year old mariage is the most accepted)
she was considered mohammeds favorite wife and is called 'the mother of the believers'

Yes, it's strange that Muhammad is so revered. The hadith - the accepted collections of the sayings and doings of Muhammad, which serve as a basis for determining Islamic teachings along with the Qur'an - tell the story. From the hadith of Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 65:
"Narrated 'Aisha: that the Prophet married her when she was six years old and he consummated his marriage when she was nine years old. Hisham said: I have been informed that 'Aisha remained with the Prophet for nine years (i.e. till his death)."Muhammad reportedly lived from 570 to 632, and if we subtract the 9 years he lived with Aisha, it seems he was around 53 when he pursued the 6 yr-old. He convinced the girl (and her parents - in another story) in this manner (from vol 7, book 62, number 15):
Narrated 'Aisha:Muhammad's preferences are clear from another hadith - vol 7, book 62, number 17:
Allah's Apostle said (to me), "You have been shown to me twice in (my) dreams. A man was carrying you in a silken cloth and said to me, 'This is your wife.' I uncovered it; and behold, it was you. I said to myself, 'If this dream is from Allah, He will cause it to come true.' "
Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah:Muhammad gave these instructions as to encouraging people to follow his behavior:
When I got married, Allah's Apostle said to me, "What type of lady have you married?" I replied, "I have married a matron' He said, "Why, don't you have a liking for the virgins and for fondling them?" Jabir also said: Allah's Apostle said, "Why didn't you marry a young girl so that you might play with her and she with you?'
Volume 9, Book 92, Number 404:The unfortunate consequence of this is that child marriage (specifically for girls with middle-aged men) is allowed in some Islamic countries. Also, Muhammad's example has led to this pronouncement in the Ayatollah Khomeini’s book ‘Tahrirolvasyleh’ (1990):
Narrated 'Aisha:
The Prophet did something as it was allowed from the religious point of view but some people refrained from it. When the Prophet heard of that, he, after glorifying and praising Allah, said, "Why do some people refrain from doing something which I do? By Allah, I know Allah more than they."
“A man can have sexual pleasure from a child as young as a baby. However, he should not penetrate vaginally, but sodomising the child is acceptable. If a man does penetrate and damage the child then, he should be responsible for her subsistence all her life. This girl will not count as one of his four permanent wives and the man will not be eligible to marry the girl's sister...It is better for a girl to marry at such a time when she would begin menstruation at her husband's house, rather than her father's home. Any father marrying his daughter so young will have a permanent place in heaven.”Apart from pedophilia, Muhammad is also reported in the hadith as doing the following things: ordering the execution of apostates, the execution of homosexuals, starting wars, ordering that he keep the spoils of his wars, keeping slaves and supporting slavery, having men and women stoned to death, hacking off women's hands, having people beheaded, ordering floggings, and having people tortured by branding them in the eyes. Muhammad's behavior was not even "good" for those times - eg centuries before Muhammad, Jesus was reported speaking against stonings. It is as if Caligula had invented a religion - though possibly a Caligulan religion would have been milder, and more embracing of music, painting, sculpture etc. I feel that reform of Islam will probably require some of these hadith to be re-considered by Islamic leaders, and perhaps declared inauthentic. share
