Slightly OT: What networks have sold out?

I have noticed that many cable networks have sold out by putting on shows that don't help the network stay true to its original meaning. So far, here's a list of networks that I know have gone downhill:

TV Land- Now, they are putting on reality show such as High School Reunion. Also, they don't show as many classic TV shows as they used to.

Soapnet- They now have reality shows and movies. This was built only for soaps.

Cartoon Network- I liked this network a lot better when it was called "Cartoon" Network. You know, when they only had cartoons and didn't have live action shows as well.

ABC Family- Honestly, I barely see this as a "family" channel anymore. They had better shows before ABC bought it and it was no longer called Fox Family.

MTV- Of course, this is the biggest and most notorious sell out network in history. All they show is a bunch of fake reality shows with no substance. They barely even play music videos anymore.

VH1- Same as MTV, except they play music videos more often.

So, what other networks do you guys think have sold out?

I agree how those channels have gone downhill. I don't even watch VH1 much anymore. Another channel I know that has gone from it's roots is Disney channel. It used to be a premium channel that you had to order and it had shows for the whole family and behind the scenes concerts. Now all it is Hanna Montana and High School Musical type shows for teens that they run the same episodes of 2 or 3 times a day. The mornings have shows for toddlers, but there's nothing for adults like me. I see why it became a regular cable channel as nothing they have now would be worth adding on to your bill. Who will be the next network sell out? Animal Planet showing "Wild Police Chases Caught on Tape"?

Agree with all of the others, but would add AMC. AMC used to be strictly classic movies. Then they started adding 70's movies. Ok, I guess they are now considered classic, but now there are recent movies. A couple years ago I saw Chain Reaction listed on AMC and that came out in 1996 (and wasn't even a big hit). I just saw a movie from 2004 (can't remember what) was listed. How can a 4 year old movie be called "classic"?

reply

Wonder how long TCM (Turner Classic Movies) begins showing bombed movies from the 2000's.

reply

If that ever happens, I'll freak out. I love TCM

ESPN has gone downhill, especially during the baseball season. They seem to think every baseball fan in the country is a fan of either Boston or the two New York teams. It's all about advertising revenue from the northeast coast. One of these days I'm waiting for a miracle to happen where they'll have Kansas City playing Seattle or a couple of other small market teams and the announcers will lose all track of the game because they need their Boston Red Sox/New York Yankees fix.

They used to show new episodes of Forensic Files, Arrest & Trial, Masterminds, The Investigators, Body of Evidence and I, Detective. Now every time I turn it on, they show World's Scariest Police Chases or World's Dummest Criminals. They shoved that the dumb show The Real Hustle down everyone's throat and I think it was off the air within like three weeks (it was advertized for like 10 weeks). I cannot even remember the last time I saw a new episode of Forensic Files.

It seems like almost every network has sold out. There is reality garbage on almost every network. As long as people continue to watch it, they will keep showing it. While the people in these forums are intelligent viewers who care about quality programming, there are too many people who want to be dumbed down by reality tv.

everything is realty now i hate tv

ok, I just checked MTV's schedule to see when they actually air music videos. For Monday, March 23, from 6am to 5:30am Tuesday, there are no videos shown! Only reality shows.

Over at Vh1, you can watch videos from 4am to 10am. Arent most people at work during that time frame?

I know that my cable provider has channels that show nothing but videos, like VH1's soul, Heavy metal, RnB, Country, Hip hop.....you have to pay for those but if you're an avid video watcher, i'm sure its worth it.

I completely agree with all of these. These channels used to be awesome before. I think Nick and Disney Channel should be added to the list.

The G4 Network was originally a video game newtwork, but now they're showing Cheaters, Cops, and other shows like that.

YOU'RE MAKING ME CRAZY!!!!!

I forgot about that (probably because I don't watch the channel anymore for that very reason). Definately.

TLC: you don't really learn much from it
Disney
Nick
The-N: this channel was strictly made for teens and young adults, but now it's basically another Nickelodeon channel, they show nothing but kiddie shows during the day. Their normal line up used to consist of popular teen shows like Degrassi, Instant Star and other teen dramas. They also had reality shows that were made specifically for the channel. It's nothing like that anymore since they switched from a 12 hour station to 24 hours.

MTV makes me so mad that they've sold out like they did. It's no longer Music Television. I hate the mindless crap they show now.

Adam Lambert= Next American Idol!

#1 - MTV, by a hair, I don't think I would be saying anything different than all of you other guys.

#2 - Vh1, by a mile (classical 80s music video network becomes - 90s teeny boppers and reruns of Real World makes random guest appearances during late 90s - then turns into Celebreality in mid 2000s) Giving us Flavor of Love, (extended versions of ) Surreal Life, Rock of Love, Celeb Rehab, My Fair Brady, Tough Love, the Pick Up Artist, For the Love of Ray J, and I can keep going all night.

#3 - BET, should be renamed the Hip Hop-Gangsta Rap Network, no type of programming diversity. There aren't even any news shows on it anymore.

#4 - Sci-Fi Channel, I know it's a stretch. But, I put them on here for not showing good Sci-Fi movies, but those second rate abominations, I would never use my coupon for at the local 1.99 video store. And, they show wrestling.

#5 - TBN (Trinity Broadcast Network), I think them people sold out God and everything else Christian, like 25 years ago.

#6 - The CW, or in this case I guess it would be the WB and UPN.

No mentions, why?

ESPN - has always been favorable to big market teams, usually in the East.

ABC Family - I do think most of the movies and old sitcoms are pretty much family oriented, but I think they are dangerously close to becoming ABC Teen Network.

Bravo- Use to have performing arts and indie films. Now, all it ever shows are reality programs like Real Housewives of every possible city in the US and those fashion shows.

reply

SyFy...wants to broaden its appeal.
