I got as far as the blender...

... then I was done with it. But I came here and people are saying it's not as bad as it looked. I might give it another try. But the sheer beastly idiocy of Rossum's character, and frankly, unkindness was such a turn off. I can't imagine anybody behaving that way toward another human being, sick or not, and I was a mondo wild child in college. Real human beings show a little bit of concern... These are a husband and wife facing a horror, and this girl chargse into their house and acts like a pure *beep* without the least bit of self-awareness. Uh-uh. I can understand some slapstick, but it has to be well-intentioned blundering and not indifferent jerk in order to be amusing.

You saw 12 minutes (so basically like 3 scenes) of a 102 minutes movie and you were done with it.

I won't even comment on how wrong you are about Rossum's character, her humanity, love and kindness for Swank's character is what this whole movie is about, how she treated her as a friend and a human being from the start instead of a patient.

But if you don't see how wrong you are judging a movie like that from its first 10 minutes and then creating a rant where you are 100% mistaken about everything, then no one can help you.

Needless to say, you missed on a wonderful, touching film.

First of all, you actually did comment and share your opinion about the OP's comment regarding Rossum's character. And in what world is it "kind" or treating someone like a "human being" to coldly say "how long have you got, I've read that people with ALS live 3 to 5 years?"? That was disgusting as were most things about Rossum's character.

How does Rossum have any right to say "what we don't all deserve, is a little extra snatch on the side from some skanky cooze."? Isn't she aware that she's just as skanky as the worst of them? I agree with the OP, and this was nothing more than "girl power" using ALS as the vehicle.

I'm so glad you posted this! I am a very well-versed movie goer however I had never heard of this one. I was so pleased to discover this while scrolling through channels looking for something to watch, it looked quite intriguing, then the blender!!! This is one of the most audience insulting moments I've ever seen in a film (and I managed to sit through most of 'North') I simply couldn't bring myself to watch another second of a film in which the director was asking us to believe that any person who grew up in the Western world, no matter how disorganized, disheveled or even underprivileged they are, doesn't know to put a lid on a blender????? Absolutely ridiculous.

reply

I didn't know. We never had a blender until I became roommates with my brother and I had to ask him whether I should put on the lid or not.

I think it was just exaggeration on the writers' part. I hated the early scenes with Rossum's character, too, but after sticking with it, I realized that some exaggerations were necessary to be able to establish her character as a certain type within a short time-span, because they needed to use the rest of the movie for something else.

I too thought the beginning was sketchy and botched and uninvolving - but this is one of these films that gets better and deeper - it's rare, but it happens. :-)

But I was contemplating pushing the stop button as well - and NOT on the blender...;-)

reply

I couldn't agree more;
the first 10 minutes where so horrible that one could easily be tempted to stop it.
Yet the movie does get better (a lot better).

reply

Not all that unbelievable. Also there was the scene where she told her mom that she learned how to cook (and put the lid on the blender).

The best blender scene ever is Sean Penn in 'I Am Sam'. He plays a retarded guy who has to be in court for a custody hearing for his daughter. It's a nice movie. Anyway....he wears a suit-and-tie to work that day - he works in an ice-cream shop - and right before he has to leave for court, the blender splashes ice-cream all over him. It is hilarious lol! The movie was not a comedy though.

I just saw this movie yesterday. The original poster is incorrect.

The blender accident wasn't about her being dumb. It was an accident. It was her first meeting with her new employer, and she was nervous and in a rush. She kept cutting vegetables and putting them in the blender. Up & down, up & down, FAST....and she accidently hit the 'on' button as she was coming down with her hands.

Just like in 'I Am Sam'. It was about being flustered, not stupid.
