Problem with time-frame

Clearly Shaun and Daz appear to be at least 45 years old. In reality Carlyle was born in '61 and Evets in '60 - so both were in their late 40's in 2008 when Summer was made. How can Shaun be reflecting on an accident that happened 12 years ago? That Summer those boys would have been in high school. Even if they were 18, add 12 to that and it comes up to be 30. What am I missing? Shouldn't it be more like 30 years ago? For me, it throws off the entire movie. I found it distracting trying to figure out where all the time went. Daz's kid was at the very least 14 years old, and looked to be about 17. Socha was actually 21 in 2008.

Both IMDB and Netflix describe the same reflection on a Summer 12 years ago. If anyone could clear this up for me, I would really appreciate it.

I thought Shaun and Daz where about 40, but look older (specially Daz) because of alcoholism, angst and, in Daz case, illness.
Daniel, Daz' son, seemed to be about 18, but, if by the time of the accident, Shaun and Daz where like 17, they could be now 36 (if Daniel was born a year later). I think Daz, even ill, looks a lot older. Shaun and Kathy looked ok. But definitelly no 12 years between the accident and the "actual" times. IMHO.
