At the end, Danny is laying on the ground after he's been beaten up. But, are we supposed to assume he survives or dies? Because you can hear police/ambulance sirens in the background which makes me assume that Danny survives.

The ending appears ambiguous, which I like, but on the dvd commentary the director concurs with your assumption, that Danny survives.

All during the fade-out, you can see Danny moving, so I always took it to mean he survives. Of course, what he has to look forward to is another question.
