Mira Sorvino sucks as Tess - her acting is appaling

I think it is clear that Mira Sorvino can hardly muster enough acting prowess to portray an archeologist.
She comes across very unlikeable in my opinion. Her facial expressions seem odd and annooying. In fact most of the acting is terrible. Foley does reasonably. The script is poor.

I can't exactly pinpoint what has made this show so abysmal, but it really is. No intensity whatsoever, even the lame Da Vinci Code movie came off better (but not by much)....

Perhaps... Well anyway the story picked up a little here in the last 10 minutes. I'll probably watch the next episode (with 'one eye' only though!) just to see what happens. Should be more interesting hopefully.

I haven't been watching the TV movie that intently - I've just been looking up periodically from my laptop. I gotta say, while I haven't paid much mind to Ms. Sorvino's acting, I'm really appreciating the eye-candy aspect of her casting in this movie. She is....purty.

The big fella pulls out a sock filled with nickels. Then Schrute grabs a can of hairspray and a lighter.
You're useless.

reply

Well I can agree with that... I watched looking up from my laptop too - but I did think the acting was bad.

It's hard to believe she won an Oscar. Terrible acting. Her ADD personality makes it hard to understand how she can portray a world-renown archaeologist.

reply

I totally agree. I said the same thing (the Oscar remark) to my wife.

Well, as an archaeologist myself, it makes it hard to believe that she is one. Also hard to believe that she won an Oscar. I loved this book, I couldn't even take a half hour of the TV movie. I wish a film company would have bought the rights.

reply

She's a much better actor than the rest of the cast, if that helps.
There were plenty of holes in the plot, and that may be what makes her look so bad.

Imagine that.

Ahh, give the girl a break. The book, to me, was unreadable because Tess' character was so cardboard-ingly GREAT AT EVERYTHING AND WONDERFUL AND PURTY. All the book's characters were like that...no depth whatsoever.

But I like Mira Sorvino. And I think she did a great job with what she was given. It did remind me of a Librarian style production. Perfect Sunday night viewing.

Meryl Streep couldn't have done anything with this role. Poorly written-the book was terrible also. The direction was bad-looks like a made for tv SF channel movie.

My husband and I agreed that she acts the part well - it's the character that's so obnoxious. And her little girl speaks like a 35 year-old ("It must be all the excitement of the evening." What kid says that?). But we figured Scott Foley's super natural acting and the interestingness of the plot were worth sticking with it.

Her acting was a disappointment. I agree that her character was super annoying and abrasive. The book's version of her character was just as bad but more serious and even more full of herself. Substituting Morocco for Turkey was offensive. Did not like the book, liked the movie less.

reply

I agree that Sorvino is a flawed Tess.. However, I do not agree the literary Tess was annoying/'full of herself'. Tess of the novel was confident, but humble. Smart, but always willing to analyze. She was spunky in the book, and Sorvino takes that over the top.

All in all you're just a nother brick in the wall.

reply

Sorvino is totally average- beady eyes with no brows, thin mouth. Just bleh. Someone big must have dropped out and she was a last minute replacement.

I thought she did well in the lighter moments, but whenever the role required any depth of emotion, she did suck. Whenever she talked about her father it came across like she was lying.

That said, the dialogue in general was awful.
