Anyone else hope this will be a total flop?

I dislike Simon Cowell and everything he stands for. He crushes dreams and profiteers over ones that come true by forcing them to sell out. Paul Potts wasn't a nobody with a random talent, he trained with Pavarotti, look it up, anyone know if that minor detail is in the film?

...Did you watch the trailer? The film seems to be more about the journey before BGT than anything else. I wouldnt be surprised if that bit is just before the end. This movie barely has anything to do with Simon Cowell.

So because the OP has a grudge against Simon Cowell, he wants this movie to fail. Never mind the dedicated work of the filmmakers and cast nor the fact that the movie will expose millions of potential new fans to Paul Potts’ music, all of that pales in comparison to this persons hatred of Cowell. Yikes. To top that off, he’s wrong with both of his reasons for wanting the film to fail.

First, Cowell has very little to do with One Chance. He is only one of several producers and he only appears—as he should—near the end of the film as part of the Britain’s Got Talent audition. Second, Paul Potts did not “study” under Pavarotti. As a talented amateur he was invited to sing before the great tenor with a lot of other aspiring singers. When his moment came, Pavarotti criticized Potts for running out of breath during his aria. That was the extent of their meeting. The OP suggests the proof that Potts studied under Pavarotti can be looked up. HE should do the looking up to find the truth before posting his negative junk here.

Oh, really? He's one of the producers. The movie was funded and created by Syco TV/Syco/Syco Entertainment. Who owns Syco TV, you may ask? Simon Cowell & SME 50/50.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syco
Syco Entertainment, often known simply as Syco, is a global joint venture between Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment focused on the production and marketing of music, television, film and digital content. It employs a staff of more than 50 in offices in London and Los Angeles and manages a string of high-profile television and music brands through partnerships with Sony Music labels and TV production partners, most notably FremantleMedia. Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment each own 50% of the business.

Syco TV primarily operates in the United Kingdom and the United States. Its key franchises are The X Factor and Got Talent, which are two of the most successful TV formats in the world.

Nope. I see no conflict of interest here whatsoever. Nada. Zip.

This movie is in no way another cash cow for Simon Cowell and giant advertisement for his products: X-Factor & "Insert country name here" Got Talent. Cowell is also not attempting to profit from a man he dropped from his record label, Syco/Columbia, who (Potts) is now represented by SME (Sony Music Entertainment) Germany.

I'm sure there are some other grouchy meanies out there who are hoping for failure, but I saw the film at the Aspen Film Festival, and it's excellent. It deals--humorously and heartwarmingly--with the subject's life and difficulties BEFORE Cowell. And anyone who looks up the facts will find that Paul Potts did not "train with" Pavarotti, but during a brief bit of training -- and don't you realize that people on any talent show HAVE tried to do their talent before walking out on stage? -- he did have one opportunity to sing in front of Pavarotti, but choked and was criticized.

Opinions are like a$$h0les ... no wait a$$h0les can have more than one opinion.

Are you saying opinions can only have one opinion? That makes no sense.

Buffoon, Simon Cowell dropped Paul Potts after his second album because it wasn't making enough $$$ for him. Paul started his own label with someone else. And the bullying story is so right on topic right now. Potts did NOT have an easy childhood but DID make it to the top. I share your hate for Cowell, but LOVE Potsy. You should be proud to have him represent your country.......An American living in the US.

I don't suppose Simon Cowell is making any money out of this movie, and good luck to Paul Potts who seems to be a very genuine and nice man. As for training with Pavarotti, other posters seem to think you've got your facts wrong here - but so what if he did?

You come across as a rather begrudging individual.

So Simon Cowell IS in it, IS influencing it and WILL profit from it? Thought so. Ok so I exaggerated on the "training with" thing BUT, to ask my original question again; is it mentioned in the film?

I might begrudge Cowell and his success (only because of how it's become to be, tacky shows based around public voting) but is it any different to those begrudging my opinion of him, this film and the false biography it will obviously portray?

reply

Who cares whether it's mentioned or not? A single master class is nothing like being "personally trained" and yet, you continue to think that this is some sort of major oversight or conspiracy to misrepresent his training. While it's a neat anecdote, maybe the writers/producers thought that it would be misinterpreted (by viewers like you). Or maybe Pavarotti didn't want to be portrayed in the film. Or any number of other innocuous reasons.

Pavarotti died years ago...

" is it mentioned in the film? "

Yes and the total failure of that encounter is a major theme of the whole thing.

The main problem is the decision to relocate the man's whole life to the town he ended up in, Port Talbot, not Bristol where most of it happened , which rather messes up the point of Cordon's Bristol accent.

Other than that his many mishaps along the way to BGT are fairly true to the facts.

Oh and I still don't like his voice even though he's obviously a very nice chap.

I loved it.

Your personal hatred toward a producer of a movie does not justify your malignant desire for the film to flop. Harvey Weinstein is probably the most hated producer in Hollywood but many of his movies are incredible.
In a comment below, you admitted that you exaggerated his training with Pavarotti, therefore, your only point to criticize Paul's amateurism is null and void. No one knew who he was before, even if he did sing in an orchestra (mind you, his main income was still from being a salesman).
Get real buddy, the Earth doesn't revolve around you.
