Red John

I know it is a topic that has been covered many times but I want to see if anyone has a different opinion.

First of all, I think that Xander Berkeley was the best choice for Red John. He is one of the best in anything I have seen him in.

However, I would have liked for some things to be different. One thing is that he should have appeared in more episodes and not only in one before the final episodes. I know that this have been posted before but it just bugged me as well.

The death of Red John should have been a lot better actually. It just needed something more to make it better. It seemed rushed off, like they couldn't wait to finish it off.

Furthermore, I would have liked for Xander Berkeley not to be in the final list of seven suspects that Patrick made. It would be better to come off as a surprise in my opinion.

So, what do you think?

reply

You're correct, the topic has been covered many times, but I'm always willing to discuss "The Mentalist".

After the reveal episode aired, many on this message board referred to it simply as "The Debacle". Merriam-Webster defines "debacle" as 'a great disaster' or 'complete failure'. Take your pick; the reveal episode was either and both.

Mind you, prior to the reveal, there was no more enthusiastic lover of the show than I. I watched most episodes AT LEAST twice on the night of original air and usually once again prior to the subsequent week's episode. So it's not as if I am venting as a "pure hater". I LOVED the show. But the reveal episode changed everything for me. I will probably never watch another episode, nor will I ever watch any other Bruno Heller series in the future (yes, Gotham, I'm talking about you).

Further, I watched the show BECAUSE of the Red John arc. The Red John storyline is what drew me into the show, and it is what kept me watching week after week. It is for this reason "The Debacle" was such a game-changer for me and others of my ilk. I understand the opinion of those who watched each week for the 'procedural' aspect of the show (i.e., the 'case-of-the-week', as some on this board have called the non-Red John episodes). I understand they may have simply treated the reveal episode as 'just another episode' or 'something that had to be done to get on with the re-boot of the series'. Their opinion is "Meh. So what if the clues didn't match up? So what if we never hear about Red John ever again? So what if there were unanswered questions? Meh. Let's move on to his career in Texas with the FBI."

Again, I understand that.

However, those of us who staked their claims on the Red John arc were severely damaged by the incredibly bad reveal episode. Where do I begin?

a. You (and others) have said it felt rushed. My comeback to that has always been: Regardless of what the actual truth may be about CBS execs ordering Bruno Heller to wrap it up and re-boot, he still had the first eight episodes to finish the story. 8 COMPLETE HOURS!! It was a much, much longer time than the show had devoted to the Red John arc in the previous five seasons combined!

b. Unanswered questions. I have posted lists of questions Jane could have asked Red John in the chapel scene after Red John says, "You probably have a lot of questions for me, huh?" I could re-post it, but suffice it to say there were LOADS of uncovered issues they failed to wrap up in "The Debacle" or any of the follow-up episodes.

c. Red John being so "regular". I know Bruno explained it away by saying most serial killers, once discovered and captured, are quite bland and boring people. However, Red John was different. This guy was always two or three steps ahead of his pursuers... and this was over a 25 year period. He wouldn't even leave a single clue! Now, all of a sudden, he's going to reveal his entire plan like a bad guy in a Batman television episode? He's going to get within arms reach of the one man who dedicated every fiber of his soul to seeking revenge against him? He's going to enter the church with no getaway vehicle? His only backup plan is a small woman yielding a small knife?

Side note: It's a very bad thing when a "fake" Red John in Season 3 is tremendously more interesting, compelling, and dynamic than the real Red John revealed 2½ years later.

d. Revelations by the show's creator: Bruno Heller admitted choosing the identity of Red John "a year or so" prior to the reveal. There is persuasive evidence indicating the choice was probably made much more recently than that. But even if we assume Heller was telling the truth, it's no wonder the Red John clues didn't always match the ending... the writers were writing the first 5 seasons with either someone different in mind to play the role... or with no one in particular in mind to play the role... or with three or four different possibilities in mind to play the role. Take your pick. Any would be devastating.

I'll wrap up for now, as this has already gone on far too long. I will leave you with this: Although you stated you weren't overly impressed, I did like the manner in which Jane killed Red John. I thought it was true to Jane's series-long promise(s), it offered a one-on-one confrontation, and Jane was able to get what he wanted to get from Red John -- an 'admission' of guilt and a begging for mercy, all the while squeezing the literal life out of his long-time nemesis. Now, did the episode have to include the seemingly endless, extended chase scene prior to the confrontation? Certainly not! But the actual confrontation was satisfying to me.

Sorry, fonoscope.

I guess I like to be thorough. 😀 We have plenty of time to examine, digest, and absorb information around the Board these days, as there are only a handful of posts per month... so it's not like we are under any sort of time crunch. Give it a chance, read it, and respond. If not, no hard feelings.

Sorry, magenta.

Take some time, give it a read, and respond however briefly you would like. As I wrote in the original post, there isn't (and hasn't been) much action on this board, so we have time to digest and discuss.

What Would you have asked Red John?

1. "I've shaken hands with 2,164 persons since my wife and child were murdered. 807 of them were women. 949 of them were men I had brief encounters with that I never saw or heard from again. I saw you for a very brief time in a small town 60 miles from where I am based, and that was five years ago. Why weren't you one of the 949??"

2. "How could you have a personal relationship with people close enough they would die for you rather than be captured?" (Miriam Gottleib, for example)

3. "Why did people talk about a higher form of religion when talking about you?" (Anthony Gupta) "Why did people talk about being loved?" (Rebecca Anderson) Because each of these ideals would be impossible if "nobody knew who you were?"

4. If you spent time in Visualize and on Elliston Farm, why didn't Bret Stiles recognize you?"

5. "Why did you look like a mere 35yr old man with dark hair and a thin build on video surveillance in episode 2x08?"

6. "Why did you have to kill the morgue attendant, Baris Acar?"

7. "Why did Sophie Miller refer to you as 'middle aged' in episode 6x02?"

8. "Since the main writer on the show indicated you had made several 'where's waldo' type appearances prior to Season 4, but your only appearance was in the second episode of the first season, I'm wondering what she meant by that?"

9. "You're pretty smart... been one step ahead of me the entire decade I've been chasing you. So why do you have no backup plan except for a dainty woman carrying nothing but a knife?"

10. "As a follow-up to the previous question.... you plan to escape after you kill me and leave me with Bertram, the suspected Red John. So why don't you have a vehicle? Did you plan to walk back to Napa??"

11. "As a follow-up to THAT, I must ask why you decided to appear at all? You could have easily and safely disappeared forever... because according to the police and the DNA results, you were 'proven' to be killed in the explosion at my home in Malibu?"

12. "Speaking of Malibu, why are my wife and child buried here in a Sacramento cemetery, when I lived there... more than 400 miles away from here?"

13. "How did you have time to build a shanty with Dumar Tanner, live with and have a close relationship with Rosalind Harker, kidnap two twin girls, and watch unlimited amounts of TV... all the while being the sheriff of a small county elsewhere from where all this was taking place?"

14. "If you have a phobia of pigeons, why did you step foot in the belfry in episode 6x03?"

15. "How can you be a hunter and have an extreme or irrational fear or aversion of birds/pigeons?"

16. "When I ask, 'Can I show you something?' about a minute from now, why don't you simply stay away from me and say, 'NO Freaking Way!'?"

17. "Most, if not all TBA members were 'crooked' cops or someone else you had 'leverage' on for a past wrong-doing. Why would Rosalind Harker be a member of TBA?"

18. "If you hate 'cheap imitations of your work', why didn't you kill Dr. Linus Wagner?"

19. "Why did the show runner decide to release a preview for the episode we're currently in, showing YOU (or your stunt double) crashing thru a sliding glass door, LAST week???"

20. "Why was this episode released early so millions could watch on line and then reveal/spoil your identity?"

21. "How can a man simultaneously be mostly bald and also have 'short, straight' hair?"

22. "Why was the dub of you saying, 'It's totally fair. Game's over and I won' sooooo badly done?"

23. "That's all for now... in the meantime, can I show you something?"

reply

I still miss the show. I even imagined Patrick Jane working with Gibbs at NCIS helping them solve some serious breach of security. but, they never did. Maybe they still will have him on NCIS as a guest.

Well, I wrote about 1000 words, so don't hang your hat on the word "admission" in my post. You'll notice I put the word in quotes in my original post. We've heard your repeated objections as to whether RJ's blinks could legitimately be considered confessions or admissions... no sense in reiterating them here.

And, as I've written 100 times or more, according to "The Mentalist" series creator, the writers, the actors, anyone else in any way associated with the series, plus all episodes following "The Debacle", McAllister was RJ. Period. End of story. Yes, even though he didn't come out and say, "Hello, my name is Thomas McAllister, and I am Red John."

You are talking gibberish, and you are, apparently, unable to write one coherent sentence. I'd imagine that you are used to "what the hell are you talking about" response by now.

And maybe you should take your own advice: write your own mystery/crime TV show, based on the main mystery arc that goes on for six seasons, and is the main drive behind main character's actions, suddenly put a stop to that arc with a bs resolution that leaves dozens of unanswered questions and plot holes, and fire two members of the main cast while you're at it, but keep the show going anyway. Then see will people like it and what kind of reputation will follow you afterwards.

I guess, by your logic, if you were to have a meal at a restaurant and get a food poisoning, you wouldn't complain since you didn't know how to cook.

And even if I would make a TV show, the one better than Mentalist, that wouldn't make their resolution of the Red John arc any better.

I think Xander Berkeley is an extremely fine actor and was totally on board with MacAllister being Red John when they focused on him in the wedding episode of season 6. I could even say his lackluster appearance back in season 1 was all an act.

Ideally, however, I thought that the best Red John suspect was Ray Haffner. Visualize connection. Was part of both FBI and CBI. Experience in wiretapping and surveillance. Was in two episodes prior to season six. We saw Jane shake hands with him. He totally made sense to me. Some might say Haffner wasn't charismatic enough, but I could totally see RJ downplay that part of him to not seem suspicious around Jane, Lisbon, and the rest of the CBI team.

I also thought it would have been an interesting twist if immediately after Patrick Jane is found not guilty from killing the fake Red John and he tells Lisbon that Carter wasn't Red John, Patrick Jane, having no idea, meets the actual Red John and actually works with him. That would have been awesome.

My biggest problem with the Red John storyline, however, wasn't so much the reveal or who they decided it was going to be (at the very last minute). Rather, it was how drastically they changed the character of Red John.

I was a huge fan of the RJ storyline until about season 6, episode 4. I was totally on board with Red John being a highly-skilled, extremely brilliant, charismatic, cult-like individual who was able to get a fairly small number of people (around 15 or 20 or so) so enamored with him that they were willing to die and kill for him. I could totally accept him as being so smart that he was able to hack into law enforcement database and stay ahead of Patrick Jane and the rest of law enforcement. Completely realistic? Not really. But in the TV world of Patrick Jane? Sure.

And then all of a sudden, they completely turned the script on me with the whole Blake Association/ huge secret law enforcement conspiracy, matching tattoos, secret code word. I was seriously all...WTF? I mean was he a cult-like figure that had such deep personal connection with his followers that they were willing to do ANYTHING for him, or was he the secret head of a criminal organization and nobody knew who he was and only did anything due to blackmail? And can you imagine Red John branding himself in the same fashion as his followers?

Anyway, based on how they portrayed Red John for the first five (and some in season 6) seasons, the turn they made starting in season 6, episode 4 made absolutely no sense to me. And then it just went down hill from there.

reply

Good post, red moon lily!

I agree Haffner would have made an excellent choice, fitting most if not all of the clues... except for the "where's waldo" quote from the show's lead writer prior to Season 4. Haffner's first appearance occurred just after that.

I also am in full agreement with you regarding the Blake Association. I believe they realized the writers had painted themselves into a corner, and a large, clandestine group was the only way to explain RJ's expansive knowledge, power, and abilities.

reply

Thank you! I love reading your RJ-related post! I actually wish I knew about this forum when the Mentalist was airing. The one I frequented at the time was filled with predominantly Jane/Lisbon shippers.

I didn't/don't put a lot of credence to what the writers said outside the Mentalist-Universe. Based on what they actually told and showed us in the episodes, Haffner made lots of sense to me.

As for the writers feeling they needed a clandestine group to explain RJ's knowledge and abilities, I personally didn't think it was necessary. However, if the writers wanted Red John to have been helped, that' s fine. They showed us from season 1 to season 5 finale that RJ had followers. These followers, however, knew exactly who he was and were perfectly willing to follow him at any and all cost out of deep love and reverence for him. Any of these people could have been helping him.

The Blake Association, on the other hand, was a completely different animal whose members didn't know who RJ was and only did what other BA members said because of blackmail. This change just made absolutely no sense to him. What exactly did RJ do that he needed a whole statewide(nationwide?) organization to help him?

The writers/ Bruno Heller royally screwed up. But you already know all this.

reply

Have we been watching two different shows? There was a cult AND an organization. Sometimes floating over.
