No Safety Glasses?

Would it really have been common for none of the workers in a machine shop in the mid 1970's in this location to NOT be wearing safety glasses? Or, was it just an oversight by the film makers?

I probably know the answer to this one but I just had to say something : - )

I work in engineering......and the whole safety glasses thing started in mid to late 80's.

Really? Are you in the U.S.? I've been a machinist since the 1970's and did not realize there was a time so recent that safety glasses were not worn. For example as an apprentice, seeing someone without glasses in one of the ancient films they showed us was always reason for ridicule and much laughter. :-D
Of course this is in a very large shop in the rust belt.

Nah, i'm in U.K. I work on petro-chemical plants and in engineering workshops as a mechanical technician.

In Canada in the 1970s we had to wear safety glasses while on the shop floor, whether on a machine or not. We also had to wear sensible footwear and could not have loose clothing, ties, etc.

Not in 70's Britain they wouldn't have been. We didn't even wear them in the school metalwork shop at school!

All that H&S came in much later on. And as usual with these things what started out as a good thing grew into a monstrosity of bureaucratic madness.

Kids in schools are not allowed in the playground if its snowed in case they slip and are hit with a lawsuit. That's if the school even opens if it's snowed.

Kids also have to wear safety glasses if they play conkers!

Britain has become a nightmare of health & safety, PC nonsense and trying to appease asylum seeking muslims.

Take me back to the 70's
