how much parallels Tim Allen's real life?

Prison comedies are a rather taboo subject these days but this one drew my attention because of the fact that Tim Allen did go to jail.

-in real life Tim was sentenced to 5-7 years for a drug conspiracy (ended up released in less than 3 years). He would have gotten life except for the fact that he fingered his partners. He does about the same amount of time in the film but it's revealed he took the rap for Ray Liottas character and chose NOT to finger him
-upon being released in the film, Tommy seems to have ambitions to resume his former craft (painting). In real life Tim does the same but with comedy.
-Tommy does also seem to attempt to 'play it straight' and have no ambitions to break the law again. In real life his only run in with the law in the 30 years since was a DUI.
