how did it start?

i'm way too lazy to read all the posts,so forgive me if it's been covered.
how did the allegations against the parents start?
did anyone accuse someone of something? there has to be a reason to start rounding people up for charges.
and about the evidence that was hidden during the trial. doesn't the prosecution
have to share evidence? if so,how come nobody was held responsible?
