Violet's education
So maybe I'm stupid but what exactly was Violet in school for? What degree?
shareIt seems to me that she's gotten her PhD just before the film begins. She mentions that she wants what sounds like a tenure-track teaching job at Berkeley, but doesn't get it. She then goes to Michigan for what I can only assume is a post-doctoral position (a year or two appointment), which is then extended into a tenure-track position at Winton's insistence.
shareIn fact, Winton tells Violet about halfway through the film that he's extending her post-doc, leading to them staying in Michigan for a few more years.
