She kept going on about how it's her turn to be selfish because she worked so hard to get where she was and that he needs to be supportive, when that's all he was doing. He'd worked very hard to get to where he was, but she seemed to think otherwise.

Agreed! Most romantic 'comedies' these days are ridiculously sexist in their points of view, I've pretty much given up on them. A lot of this crap is written by men, too, which is sad.

but when women cheat in films it's portrayed as a woman on some grandiose epic journey of self discovery and liberation often taking place during a mid-life crises and learns she doesn't need her husband to be happy so who cares if she broke his heart.

First off you're totally exaggerating the "alternate scenario." If Segel played the Violet part he'd be the unlikable one and I don't know why you'd think otherwise.
Secondly yes this movie is a comedy. But no Violet is not treated with a special double standard. I disliked Violet tremendously for the way she acted after she learned she could stay longer than 2 years. Look around the board topics. "Violet is a whore," "violet is a total biotch in this movie" "So the whore made him change careers..." "How could anyone like Violet and cheer for her?"
Doesn't sound like anybody is giving Violet a free pass because she is a "woman"
But in the movie BOTH partners end up cheating on each other, at different times.
The real theme of the movie is compromise, and how people grow and change throughout their lives.
