Blatant racism

The movie wasn't bad, but anyone else disgusted with the blatant racism towards Asians in this film? I mean Hollywood has always been pretty racist towards Asians, but this wasn't even remotely subtle and it's 2012 ffs. Ming was stereotypical to the max and looked semi-retarded.

reply

Not only that but also Arabs and Jews.

You can not cry racism toward Asians in s movie with one Asian character. If that were the case you could say it was discriminating towards fat red headed guys too as there was only one of them too

reply

It is NOT racist towards Asians...it is just being critical of old white men who buy younger Asian women when they divorce their wives.

Which is pretty common. Since the women want an easy way out of the country, and they get easy money when the guy dies.

reply

Retro, Asia isn't a country.

reply

No s***. Asia is the biggest continent in the world. Therefore there are a lot of countries in it that people want to get out of. They don't just want to get out of China or Vietnam, but also Russia and the like. Russia spans across Asia and Europe...

reply

I really don't think that marrying old white men is a common way for "Asian women" get out of their country, you just see it so much in the media, you think it's common. Unless you have data that supports your statement, your statement is ridiculous.

reply

It is common. I have lived in Thailand and see it in my (European) country all the time. These old/weird men with really young Asian wives. It's fairly obvious what happened.

Congratulations for being the author of the stupidest post in this place.

The asian TA was one of the most cliched stereotyped characters I've seen in a long long time. The basis behind his character is basically that he has a funny accent. "Ahcep fo Deneesa. I dong like you. I dong like you. You bich"

That being said I found his character a little funny. Yes I do find it a little annoying that Asians don't get much roles in hollywood and when they do its often for something cliche like this. But would I call it racist, not really movies like this always toe the line on being offensive but I don't think its racist.

Oh my god are you kidding me? The PC police have arrived everyone! Make way!

I just saw the trailer and I was turned off. "This Korean, that Korean" really set something off in me. I'm tired of consistently seeing Asian women portrayed as dispensable, submissive, and (honestly) inferior. It may be true in certain circumstances, but it's one of the few characteristics the media is willing to give attention to- so we get people (who have no experience with Asian culture except for Panda Express/have no Asian friends/are just plain ignorant), thinking it's the norm. It's not the norm. Asian women are just like other women, varying in personality, intelligence, social-economic status, and such.

Subtle jabs like these, towards ethnic groups in America who have served their country and have been here for many generations- need to change. pronto.
