I really can't wait for this...

The book was beautiful indeed. Mirren and Gedeck are extremely talented, with many awards between them, and I think could be threats for major awards once it has been released.

I read the book as well, fascinating. I ordered the book from England, which was not available in the US. I am huge fan of Helen Mirren, and I think she is perfect to play Emerenc. The movie is proving to be as equally obscure, no news as to a release date in the US. I read up on the author, Magda Szabó and her story reminds me a little of the film "The Lives of Others". About how she had to hide all her writings during the height of the cold war, and her books had to be smuggled out of Hungary to be published.

Finally a reply! It seems like ages ago when I read it now. I'm a huge Mirren fan too. I'm very disappointed the film hasn't been released yet, as I was hoping it would be an awards season hit. Apparently it's her toughest role yet.

I hope Mirren mentions it on Jimmy Kimmel's Oscar party airing after the Oscars (Feb 26th on ABC)....we shall see!

I saw The Door/ Az Ajto' last week in Budapest. It is great! It's been a long time since I was able to watch a movie without constantly checking my watch - it was engrossing. Mirren and Gedeck are very good in it. Now I am reading the novel (in original) and it seems Szabo and the co-writer did a very good adaptation. The cinematography is magnificent. Unfortunately, I don't know whether it will be shown widely in the UK, which would be a great pity, indeed.

Thanks this is promising news! It's been a long time since I read the book, glad you liked it. Yeah hopefully I'll be able to see it at my local which is quite independent and shows films not necessarily widely distributed.

I got the book back in June of 2010 when I found out Helen Mirren was starting to work on this film. Which is also what I did back in Feb 2004 for Brokeback Mountain, I ordered the short novel before anyone knew about it and then the film came out in late 2005. At least it had fairly wide release and I was able to see it at my local theater.
This is proving to be such an obscure movie that I doubt it will play anywhere around my area. I usually have to just order the DVD on these types of films, so hurry up already!

Wow, I liked her fashion sense, these people always complain! I only hope it makes lots of money in Hungary, maybe it will be shown in more places and earn award recognition as a result. Thanks for the article! I may reread the book, it's been a long time!
