During his questioning when he started going off on the members of the commitee, he was dragged out of the courtroom. Then it cut to him once again taking the fifth. Was that whole attack speech just played out in his own mind?

Yes--that was a "fantasy" sequence illustrating what he
wanted to say but could not because it would incriminate him!
