Just watched the film and saw your question. Felix told a straight-forward account
of what caused him to become a hermit for 40 years. How he fell in love for the first and only time in his life with a married woman, went to her house one night and encountered her husband who was bloody from having just beaten her.
He fought with him, ran upstairs to find her bloody and crawling on the floor. Followed by her husband throwing and smashing a lit kerosene lantern against the wall, causing the bedroom to become an inferno and setting her and Felix on fire.He went to try to help her, but somehow found himself thrust out the window and off the roof to the ground.
He realized then that everything was his fault, that he was responsible for her death due to his wrong choices. He lived a life of self-imposed exile as a kind of penance to atone for his guilt and shame. He ended by asking forgiveness of her sister.
(See the Quotes section for his comments on all the things he missed in his life as a result of his becoming a hermit.) Duvall is one of my favorite actors. I loved him in "Tender Mercies", "Lonesome Dove", and as a soldier of fortune in "Let's Get Harry". You're welcome. :)
