Artsy road drama featuring Zellweger & Whitaker with songs by Bob Dylan

This is a road drama in the mold of “Rain Man” (1988) mixed with elements of “A Love Song for Bobby Long” (2004). It comes across as an artsy Indie, except with a fairly big budget, a notable cast and a writer/director who had drawn Oscar attention in the past, not to mention a soundtrack that features 16 new Bob Dylan songs ("new" for 2010, that is).

If you favor those other two films you might like this one, although they’re superior. There’s enough good to make it worth checking out, like Dylan’s folk/blues/rock/gospel/country and Madeline Zima, not to mention the road movie element. But I didn’t find the story very compelling. The similar "The Yellow Handkerchief" (2008) had the same budget, but is easily the best of the lot IMHO.

Can't believe you posted this only 12 hours ago. I just the other day found out about this movie and then decided to see if my library had the DVD, and indeed they did.

I watched it tonight. It's not a perfect film, but I enjoyed it, and I'm pretty surprised the response has been as tepid as it has been.

Guess it wasn't another Marvel movie, so fuck it.

reply

It's pretty obscure so that's quite a coincidence.

reply

It's odd that a film with such a strong cast is so thoroughly unknown.

reply

Not to mention the Bob Dylan soundtrack of new songs.

reply

Sadly I thought the film kind of fizzled out in the final act. Pretty good for the first 2/3 and then lost its way near the end.

It also took what I perceived to be an atheistic turn.

reply

Yeah, the second half elicited a meh reaction from me. I can't remember the atheistic turn off hand, yet I don't doubt your word.

I like artsy road flicks like this but, like I said in my opening post, I prefer "A Love Song for Bobby Long" and, especially, the equally obscure but more compelling "The Yellow Handkerchief." The latter features William Hurt, Maria Bello and a young Kristen Stewart; it was likewise shot in Louisiana.
