Who was surprised with the twist...?

When Clooney showed up at Vera's house and discovered she was married. Personally, I did not see it coming. It made for an excellent, shocking twist to me. Others say they saw it coming a mile away (even though I don't believe them all).

reply

Nope. I knew it would be either that she had a family or that she was perfectly happy with the arrangement as it stood, since they were so perfectly matched. It would have been too easy that he met someone so casually and that the first person who actually 'got' to him would work out.

reply

I didn't see it coming - an excellent film anyway, the twist was a bonus!

Ditto -never saw it coming. Seemed bizarre. Still really liked the flick.

I unfortunately saw it coming. It was too easy to be true. And she hinted a lot at it. Like saying "just think of me as you, only with a vagina." That made me think that she was a woman of infidelities. It was sad he got his heart broken no less, but then again his life wasn't very committing either.

reply

I hoped that she wouldn't be married. As he headed toward her, I even said, "Don't be married." I really liked her, too, which I think we were all to do so that we'd be as disappointed--in the loss of the possibility and even in her--as he is.

reply

After finding she was married I no longer liked her.
She was a fraud.

reply

What does it matter? He's had his fun and she's had hers. It's too bad he can't live with it but who's to judge over her life?

reply

That quote said just the opposite. She was lying, letting him think that she had no ties, was as free as he was.

reply

i was hoping her hubs was played by gary busey.

I saw it coming, but only when he flew to Chicago. I thought 'oh god, I hope he doesn't show up unannounced and find out she's married. I hope she just has kids.' And for about a second before her husband showed up I was relieved...

Sad situation, but true to life.

reply

I was surprised at first, probably due to the good acting. But then immediately I thought to myself how it all made sense. Their relationship was too easy, too casual, and couldn't end well.

Interesting thread here considering on another thread I have engaged in a lengthy discussion of how there really was no real prior indication that Alex was married.

In fairness to those who here claim, even if not accurately, that they perhaps at least saw it as a possible turn in the narrative, well of course someone who was engaging in an affair as shown here COULD have been married. The whole affair took place away from her everyday life, and what that everyday life might have consisted of could have included a husband and children.

The problem, though, at least as I saw it, is that Alex gave many signals that she was not married. The lack of foreshadowing in that regard, I think is precisely what made the plot turn so powerful. Yes as someone noted the flying into Chicago did raise some wonder at how she would react to his surprising her. But I think it was not too much conjecture on my part that Ryan was planning on using such a visit as an occasion to ratchet up the seriousness and involvement of their relationship, following on their weekend at his sister's wedding. In other words there was dramatic tension leading up to the scene. But was there any foreshadowing that she was married, that the same person we saw talking about "settling", who had gone with RYan to the wedding, who saw how he was changing in the way he acted toward her, would have done all that and been married?

Not only do I think not, but the lack of foreshadowing was what gave the plot turn its power. Surprise! Well, I certainly was surprised.

But there is a problem with that, since the way she acted before made her being married either implausible if she was seen as mentally balanced, or plausible only if she was a kind of sociopath. And if the latter, what is the point of her character?

In short I see this as a flaw in the film. Anyone interested might enjoy the discussion starting here:

I was, but I should have seen it coming. That scene where he was saying goodbye to her in the airport, it was obvious he was hoping to have a real relationship with her, and it was making her uncomfortable. She should have taken that opportunity to tell him that's as far as it could go. Instead she acted like an innocent victim when he unintentionally jeopardized her marriage.

reply

You thought Ryan was making her uncomfortable in the airport scene? I didn't see that. Mabye I need to rewatch it, but this is the first I have heard someone say there is a specific place in the film where Alex foreshadows what later happens.

reply

Thanks for the airport referral - I'd never noticed that before and went back to watch it again

Their banter is typical of them up to that point, but the delivery is way different - he's clearly falling for her, and she knows it. There's even a moment when it looks like she's about to come clean, but looks away instead.

It's a scene that bears repeat viewings.

I also think this is a great movie to revisit at various points in life. Starting out after college, it's a sobering reminder that no job is worth your life (or death) and your work "does not define you" as the saying goes. Later, it's a study on commitment and what the lack of it can mean. And it's ultimately about finding meaning in whatever life you do choose to live.

My friends and I joked (as clooney's character was flying) "I bet she'll be married!"
"Watch, he'll get to her door and she'll have like three kids."
"Married the whole time!"

But we were still somewhat shocked that it actually happened.

reply

The part I didn't understand was why he had her address to begin with!
