So did Victor set Oscar up to get nabbed by the cops?

My mind was initially blown when I thought Victor had set Oscar up to get caught by the police in retribution for sleeping with his mother. I mean the police just came out of nowhere before Oscar even had a chance to do anything illegal, leading me to believe it was an ambush. But then I got very confused when the police started interrogating Victor afterwards, threatening him with prison time. They wouldn't do that if he was an informant. Did the filmmaker seriously miss that massive opportunity for a plot twist? Or did I read into this whole thing incorrectly? I was kind of disappointed when I learned (at least I think) that Victor hadn't set Oscar up. I had to un-blow my mind. Help?

reply

You can blow your mind again, because Victor did set up Oscar to get arrestedī€¹. If you listen carefully, he said said "I'm sorry" when the police started storming the place. It also states in a movie synopsis: "A U.S. drug dealer living in Tokyo is betrayed by his best friend and killed in a drug deal. His soul, observing the repercussions of his death, seeks resurrection."

reply

can't believe you are somehow confused by this? it's pretty obvious he was set up by his friend. it even says so in the story plot summary

reply

Ok, then why'd the police interrogate the informant then??

reply

That scene takes place before. Victor was busted, they turn him into an informant and use him to get Oscar.

reply

Yes that part was very confusing to me too. If he simply snitched on Oscar, why the interrogation scene? Major plot hole.

Also, there's the short scene towards the end where he is blowing two men in suits, and he doesn't look very happy about it. Prostitution? Or blackmail by the police?

reply

I think the interrogation was due to the shooting that happened. When anyone is shot by police, a full investigation us normally done to make sure it was justified.

It's possible that the prostitution came up during the investigation.

reply

Setting up the raid was planned. Shooting him was not. Presumably the bust was to get higher up the ladder. Now with the middle man gone, they want to know who the higher up was and are interrogating him to find out who it is otherwise without getting to the source, all they have done is killed someone for a rather low level drug deal.

reply

Also, did the police find the drugs that Oscar tried to flush? If not, that would explain the interrogation.

reply

Presumably the bust was to get higher up the ladder.

Rather not, Victor got mad at him as he found out Oscar slept with his (Victors) mother.

Also, Oscar wasn't portrayed as anything like ambitious in dealing or business, the set up was a personal matter.

reply

The bust *was* to get higher up the ladder; notice that when the police are interrogating Victor, they're eager for information on Alex because, with Oscar gone, he's the one who can lead them to the source. They say so explicitly. I agree that Victor's reasons for cooperating with the bust aren't to see the law enforced and, conversely, the police didn't trap Oscar to make Victor feel better. Victor and the police had different motives but it's the police who set up and executed the bust.
