If she already looked like a corpse ghost while waving to her husband and son, that would ruin the twist ending. (duh)

As for when she died, it most likely could have happened on the night or several days after she saw her husband get shot out of the window. She couldn't cope and killed herself.

That female cop wouldn't have known about it because Bryn was still alive when she "rescued" her. But then Bryn could have killed herself later and the cop wouldn't have known.

So only people who committed suicide in the building could live there?

The way I vied the ending was Bryn succumbed to her self-inflicted after seeing her husband shot to death. The female cop at the end is talking to herself, asking herself why she's going back to the apartment where two people just died - one by her own hand. Bryn's husband gets to move on because he was killed by someone else, while Bryn actually committed suicide, thus the ending we see. She looks normal while looking out of the window because, as we saw through the entire movie, the ghosts or whatever you want to call them can look normal when they choose. Becoming all ghosty at the end was probably more for shock-value, but it does not break the rules, in my humble opinion.

Don't know if this helps or just really confuses, but that's my two cents...
