question about the ending - SPOILERS

I have a question about the ending.

At the very end we discover Brynn is dead.Did she die from when she cut her wrist,or are we led to believe she died after her husband died?

reply

I didn't get it either.. She must have died from slitting her wrist after she saw her husband shot out of the building because it seemed like she was destined to haunt the Beacon like the other suicides but her husband and son were free on the outside (to go to heaven?)

thanks for replying:).It certainly was a confusing ending.Yeah i think most likely your theory is correct:).She probably still felt so guilty over the death of her son that she was trapped there with the others

The answer is not as straightforward as that.

Did either of you even consider the fact that the female cop who stupidly shot her husband approached her and apologised to her??
That means that the cop thought she was still alive.

If the cop thought that she was still alive at the end of the movie, then that means that she was still alive when she tried to slit her wrist.
If she had died then and there, the cop would have known about it since she was present at the scene.

Most likely Bryn killed herself the night or a few days after she had witnessed her husband getting shot out of the window. (couldn't bear the grief etc).

The cop would not have been aware of what happened, so the next time she visits Bryn in her apartment she would still think that she was alive.

However,

If we were to go by the possibility that she did die from slitting her wrist:

It's also possible that perhaps she didn't die immediately after slitting her wrist, but gradually as a result of blood loss or whatever. Perhaps by that time the female cop had left the scene and be unaware of what has happened to her since then.

There is also a random possibility that the ghosts-zombie things could have finished the job offscreen.

Either way, it still remains a confusing ending.

t's been so long since i saw the movie i've forgotten a lot of it.i think there are several possibilities there and no real way of knowing the true explanation.

the husband and son were free b/c they didn't die by suicide in that building.

She died at the scene where the cop shot her husband.

If you look at the scenes afterwards, no one acknowledged her existence in the college office (the man shut the box of pictures and carried it away while she was glookin in the box....no one would do that...especially with a wife who just lost her husband) and her sister's hospital room.

She was successful with her first attempt in Beacon Apts.

ok! I figured it out!!!

So, Bryn's husband (Paul) died from being shot by the cop. BUT he did not commit suicide. Bryn dies (either by the wounds on her wrist or some other suicide after her husband dies) and must remain in the hotel and haunt it because she committed suicide.

The cop came in to apologize to "her" knowing she wasn't there. and Bryn was going to begin the sequence of events to have the cop commit suicide as well (the way the other ghosts convinced her)

Paul ended up with the boy on the outside because neither one of their deaths were suicide.

side note... did anyone notice that the marks on the sidewalk were the same marks that were under the glass her husband was drinking when he was on the computer??

=o)

good points. another thing to point out, the cop was on medication for some sort of mental problem. the ghosts fed on people who were already anguished, so the cop is another good candidate that they can push to the brink of suicide.

reply

yes, I also noticed the marks but don't know the meaning

reply

I sort of assumed that she had killed herself shortly afterwards via another suicide attempt...especially after she lost her husband on top of all the other horrors.

Surprisingly good movie. Special effects were a bit cheesy, but I liked it and was surprised by the ending. Usually these things don't end with all the "heroes" dying.

reply

Heh, there were no heroes in this film.

I agree with saprater. When the husband falls to his death the wife is seen crying by the window. She survived the first attempt because the husband stopped her before he was shot. That is why the cop thought the wife was still alive at the end of the movie. Unfortunately the wife must of committed suicide after that event. So when the cop saw her at the end of the movie she was a ghost in the Beacon.

They also showed Bryn visiting her sister in the hospital before that last scene, so, unless she was already a ghost there too, she must have killed herself after that.
