So, why do you think she did it? SPOILERS

In the finale, why do you think she did it? I have conflicting ideas because one hand, i think it was to help everyone move on. However, i feel like she's too selfish to really think think that through like that. So whats your idea?

I don't think Jackie had any sort of noble motive behind taking herself out of the game. She's an unapologetic addict and narcissist who accepted that she had finally been caught in too many snares this time. When she just has to manage one person or a single group of people, Jackie is able to direct her narrative. Once she manipulated her sponsor into treatment solely to discredit the threat of discovery, Jackie crossed a moral boundary from which there was no return. In that episode, it is absolutely clear that the greatest love and top priority of Jackie's life is her ability to dictate her drug use. Jackie's hubris could never allow her to accept the convergence of, in no particular order, professional, financial, romantic, maternal and friendship failure. Jackie doesn't do collapse and could certainly not accept it in any, much less all, arenas of her life. With one foot dipping into a tidy future while the other is firmly planted in impending certain and public shame, Jackie did what she always does; Jackie got high and took control to assure that hers was the last word on what happens to her. In no way does what seems like closure to the viewing audience ever give Jackie the permission to remove herself. She implemented a fool-proof plan where Jackie's narcissism, avoidant personality, objection to an exposed personal life, addiction and need to be in control can co-exist.

I think Jackie did it to get high. That's all. She just didn't realize how much would make her OD. Heroin is tricky. I think she was merely looking to get high in the moment, sort of a "send off" to her new job which she wasn't that jazzed about. However, nursing was her world, so I don't think she really meant to jeopardize it by ODin then. I think like most addicts, Jackie thought she was "smarter than the drug" and could keep on keeping on with getting high.

I agree!!

My interpretation is that she realized, through the episode, that she lost everyone due to drugs. Eddie was going to jail for her, Zoe didn't want to work with her, her marriage dissolved and her best friend left. I think she was just.... done. She's an addict, so she turned to what she knew- the drugs.

Well, Eddie was only going to jail for a short time and I think she was long past the whole divorce thing. O'Hara was living in England already and she didn't lose her because of drugs.

The last shot shows Jackie alive and semi-conscious. She's in a hospital, surrounded by doctors and nurses who desperately want to save her. I think there's a good chance she survived. If so, her subsequent life would be even a sadder mess than it had been up to that point.
