Question re: final ep of Season 1...

Apparently I missed something. At the end of S1, it looked like Butcher was going to be killed by Homelander. Then he wakes up on the lawn of the safe house where his wife and Homelander's son are secured. Homelander greets his new found son, episode ends.

At the start of S2, Butcher reunites with the rest of the Boys. Was there an explanation of how/why Homelander didn't kill him and/or how he (Butcher) escaped Homelander.?
