Stormfront casting... does petite work?

Aya Cash is strikingly short/small. She seems a foot shorter when confronting Homelander. I'm not sure yet if this adds or detracts from her psychotic story arc.

Stormfront is massive in the comics, and combining that with being a sadist certainly made him terrifying. But all that power in such a small body also makes her distressing, in a way that a Maeve-like body type would not be. Ultimately I'd say the acting matters more than the body, and she is certainly selling it.

No, original Stormfront is much more threatening and scary.

I'm not a fan of the actress either, she's rather bland and dumpy looking in my opinion. If they wanted a female so bad, they should have gone for someone athletic like Gina Carano.

Were dealing with people with god like abilities? Who cares what they physically look like! None of the supes abilites are based on physique.

I have been thinking this for years... so why is Henry Cavill so jacked? Maybe DJ Qualls should be the next Superman.

reply

I have been SAYING this for years. The answer to your question: because people don't stop and think.

Superman isn't absurdly strong because of his muscles. He's strong because he's an alien. Big & jacked is only shorthand for super-strong for people who don't think clearly.

reply

Because he is flexing ...

reply

How does Superman even get jacked? Doesn't everything feel light to him? I don't get jacked from lifting 12 ounce beers. Superman would have to be bench pressing planets or something to build up his muscles.

reply

While we are on this... why does superman strain the same way when he is lifting an oil rig as when he is moving a planet. If he can move a planet, lifting an oil rig would be like lifting a paper clip.

reply

I always thought that since the first movie , when he lifts california up , but was struggling with a school bus earlier

reply

Exactly. People were complaining Gal Gadot was too skinny to be Wonder Woman. As if adding 20 or 30 pounds of muscle to a 120 pound woman would allow her to lift a tank more convincingly. It's super strength, and it's not based on muscle mass.

reply

Seems perfectly fine to me. Stature isn't all that important when their powers exceed what people can do by that much.

Also, they seem to be alluding to Stormfront being some kind of shapeshifter.

I'm not a fan of the comics so I'm not attached to Stormfront's "look" there

I think Aya Cash is awesome, precisely because she's petite, cuter than she is gorgeous, and acts sassy

It's that much more jarring when she goes apeshit and wipes out civilians, before revealing herself as a pure psychopath and racist.

With Starr's Homelander, you just know he's a psycho from the get-go (as I'm sure was the intent - but the guy's even scary during panel interviews when he's being genuinely nice)

Cash's Stormfront seems like she might be likable, and it becomes all the more believable that Vought has covered up her past misdeeds (as Liberty) and will successfully cover up her ongoing crimes.

reply

It's an old trope, the petite girl who is stronger than guys... many many examples (e.g. Maggie Q in Die Hard 4)

reply

I think her petite figure detracts. People ultimately are wired to perceive people based on physical stature - unconsciously. You can't control it whether it's PC or not. Studies after studies show that taller people are more successful and are paid more per inch. Even if your rational brain can process the whole superhero logic, ultimately your primal unconscious brain generally wins out, unless your using all your brain power to logic your way through the whole season.

There's a reason why Mr. Olympia was picked to be more believable as a Terminator than say Jack Black, even though it shouldn't matter as the Jack Black type would've work better as an undercover cyborg. Now if Hollywood takes notice like they did with Arnold and this leads to Aya becoming a lead for a slew of action movies going forward, I'll eat my words.

reply

Pretty sure Homelander is wearing a muscle suit and nobody seems to care about that.

reply

Short can work, but that giant pot belly did no one any favors.
