How did The Deep get to be one of the 7?

He wasn't too smart and didn't appear to be well-liked by his colleagues or management.

reply

Probably something like demographic targeting or similar. Also, the merchandising that comes along with him and the people that like him must be pretty decent.

reply

This.
It's not about superhero powers - it's all about the money.
In the comic books one of the strongest superheroes is a German the company inherited from the original Nazi program. Because of that he is forever destined to be kept in a second-tier team.

reply

I’m guessing, his looks.

reply

Because the world is 2/3rd water. Every super team needs a Aquaman-type cause you never know......

reply

Plus he appealed to animal-lovers and environmentalists. It's all about targeting demographics with the Supes. But your point about his practicality would count with them too. Every team has a weak link, and he was really played up as theirs.

reply

I didn't like the humor associated with him... too tragic. If he really did view the sea creatures on the same level as humans, how could he stand by while they are getting murdered casually by humans and not go mad?

reply

I did find the dolphin "rescue" scene a little odd, as you say. It dies tragically but almost in a slapstick comedy way. It didn't really work for me.

reply

Agreed.

reply

The sexual banter with the Dolphin didn't work for me either. Not sure if it was supposed to be humor or character development... just left me scratching my head.

The incestuous undertones with Homelander however... masterfully handled ;)

reply

"Almost?" It was full on intentional slapstick. The whole series has it's tongue firmly planted in cheek.

reply

I thought it was dumb. Just like him talking to the lobsters.

Don't Dolphins eat lobsters? Sea creatures prey on one another. Being able to some kind of aquatic empathy and control over sea creatures is one thing, but flirting with dolphins and then having conversations with lobsters was way over the top.

reply

I forgot he flirted with the dolphin too--yes, definitely OTT.

I'm not sure his character was handled all that well in the show vs the others. Remember that girl in Ohio he had a hookup with, and how she kept hurting his gills and calling him a freak? He could have thrown her out of the room instead of playing victim and taking the abuse. I thought it was a clumsy way of showing karmic revenge for what he'd done to Starlight, but it wasn't at all believable.

reply

yeah, i kept thinking "just throw her off you, dude!"

reply

It was a dumb scene to appease dumb people. No doubt the beginning of his redemption arc.

reply

I thought he liked it.

reply

yeah, that was a little too cold. Dolphins are intelligent creatures. It's not funny when they get run over by a truck.

reply

I was surprised at how small his role was. His name sucks BTW. They all pretty much do. I guess because by the time it came along, all the good superhero names were gone. They couldn't call him Aquaman. Heh.

Likely for budgetary reasons, we didn't really get to see the extent of his powers. He's a very different character in the comics. My understanding is that he was not only able to breathe underwater and communicate with sea creatures, but had flight, super strength, agility and durability on par with other much stronger superheroes. Probably for the feminist crowd, they had to make him inferior to Starlight.

Chace Crawford is big with the young ladies. I don't know how old The Deep is supposed to be in the show, CC looks younger than he is, but I'm guessing back in the day, that like Starlight had a poster of him, he was really popular with the teen girls who matter a lot in terms of buying shit.

Google "justice league"
Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash
Homelander, Noir, Maeve, Deep, A-Train

reply

Marketing. So that the company products could appeal to people who want to care for the environment.
