Indisputable Proof of the Leftist Lie Machine

This comedy was released a month before the Obama election. The leftists who run Hollywood and the elitist media were afraid that its patriotic message would bring out a few more conservative voters, so the Leftist Lie Machine (LLM) buried the movie.
Proof? Go to RottenTomatoes. "An American Carol" was reviewed 40 times, and 35 of those reviews were negative. I defy any leftist blog troll to find another movie in the last few years, with comparable casting and distribution, that received so few reviews. In comparison, "Sicko" got 191 reviews, and 177 of them were positive. The LLM believed that any review, even a bad one, was free publicity, so they deliberately ignored it.
This method of information control and propaganda is standard operating procedure for those who got Obama elected, and who are trying to hide the corruption and deceit that are would quickly make him a one-term president. It is at the heart of Climategate and the re-naming of ACORN. In this case, however, thanks to RottenTomatoes, the evidence is clear and indisputable.

Make a movie that is undeniably for a niche market with extremely low demonstrated social value on the grounds of faulty market analysis. Fail to have anything resembling an advertising campaign for said movie. Release it right after the banks implode and voter sentiment has already shifted towards Obama because McCain is too busy babbling to prove he can handle a crisis and Palin is too buffoonish to take seriously. Don't even hold a critics' screening for said movie, usually a surefire sign that even the movie's producers know it sucks, swallows, and gives changes for your nickel and are hoping for at least one day's receipts before word-of-mouth kills it deader than the dodo. Snivel like a gamma-male bitch about how it's somehow the Evil Liberal Cabal's fault that its total take is only 35% of its budget.

This movie is terrible, that is why the reviews are so bad. The idea of Michael Moore being visited by 3 ghosts to show him the error of his ways is pretty funny in premise and could have made a decent movie, however this movie is almost unwatchable. Team America was right-wing based but they were clever in their delivery and made it entertaining.

reply

Like I said, it was for a niche market. Further, Team America was released at the height of both Dubya's popularity and the Iraq hysteria, resulting in it actually making some profit. It was right about that time that Zucker defected to the gops, and there's no bigger zealot than a recent convert.

reply

Team America was a much better comedy than this because they got their point across in a much more clever, subtle way. South Park is geared this way too. Most people are not zealots and won't except party extreme views as comedy, for example I don't think if there was a left movie with Bill O'Reilly being shown the error of his ways by 3 ghosts visiting him and talking about equal rights for gays, helping illegals with health insurance, how George Bush planned 9/11 to gain control of oil while bashing anyone who defended this country as dumb redneck gun nuts would play any better with most people. It's too extreme a view and so is this. BTW I've always hated Bush and I liked Team America and hated this.

comedically, this movie i'm sure was hysterical to right wingers. i only really found one or two scenes funny. i got a kick out of the scene w/bill o'reilly, where michael "malone" distances himself from the 911 truthers and other kind of wacko ideas proposed by rosie "o'connell". also the professor musical would have been somewhat humorous had zucker not summoned forth fox news and declared a college education as "indoctrination". but other than that, for its production value, and as a moderate on most issues, i found it pretty unfunny. In fact, this is the MOST unfunny thing david zucker has ever done. at least the production and the acting were ok.

but politically... come on - the whole "real america" palin quote was actually repeated IN THE MOVIE. seriously? apparently having a differing opinion than the far right, not liking country music, going to college, and producing documentaries automatically makes you unamerican.
other points:
i'm not sure that zucker realized the hypocrisy in the scene w/michael's nephew's kids needing all kinds of medical treatments -- what with the nephew being in the military-- and poking fun of moore's sicko earlier in the film. i.e. all those kids who should have the best medical care in the world (being under the wing of the american military) come up short on medical care, yet this is somehow moore's fault? or maybe he agrees with moore but is too convicted to his cause to admit it.

also it's pretty clear that david zucker is jealous of moore, pointing out over and over again that "no one watches documentaries" and he only won an oscar for "a documentary". and thinking that michael moore's one big dream is to produce a hollywood feature. Zucker is clearly still bitter that BASEketball didn't win best picture.

it would have been funnier if had gone way overboard w/the right wing propaganda in my opinion. but the film couldn't seem to decide whether it was satire/comedy/or political opinion. poking fun at moore's "lies in documentaries" almost seems like a cop out by not calling itself a comedy, and not right-wing/conservative/GOP satire -- or just doing a documentary himself. of course even fewer people would have seen it had it been a documentary -- as pointed out by zucker himself, stating that "no one watches documentaries in theaters" - well certainly no one who would go to see this movie.

i lost a great deal of respect for david alan grier for appearing in this film. although the few lines they gave a black man were well acted, and funny.

of course, the whole "war never solved anything LLOLOLOLOL" argument is brought into play by general patton via WW2 and the US civil war, which of course, is a gross oversimplification of what diplomacy is about.

zucker's understanding of JFK is way the hell off - anyone that has studied the Cuban Missile Crisis will tell you that had the president not have been willing to negotiate w/our enemies and had been as cynical of the UN as zucker(as zucker suggests the president SHOULD be), the world probably would have been sent into nuclear war, and I wouldn't be able to express my right to free speech right now.

McCarthy as pictured as just "a drunk guy from wisconsin", and not the true bastard that he was. do some research for Christ's sake (and yes, I'm a Christian - not that should matter).

the ACLU lawyers as zombies was funny. though the ten commandments are nowhere in US law. not that they aren't a good bunch of laws themselves. however, zucker does portray the removal of the ten commandments from a courtroom as somehow the destruction of the US judicial system (wtf?). i know some people think this way, but really???

the worst point this movie tries to make of course, is that having a certain opinion means you are A)unamerican B)You HATE american C) you are somehow a mindless zombie who just shouts phrases you heard from someone over and over (aka "the real america") D)you are anti-(US)military E) you love terrorists F) you hate your heritage G) you are somehow ungrateful H) a bigot who hates jews and black-americans I) indoctrinated via "education". Did I miss anything? probably. oh yeah - and if you don't like country music, you're unamerican.

those who portray this type of propaganda on both sides are only making things worse. we're all americans. we have different opinions on different issues. calling someone "unamerican" for having a certain opinion on an issue is not only unamerican itself, but un-democratic in refusing to acknowledge that the real problem is corporate lobbies corrupting our political institutions, most notably, Congress (especially the senate). Looking in from the outside, imagine if you saw a law get passed in france that gave government subsidies to snail farmers, and was itself, written by snail farmers. In exchange the french representative that "sponsored" the bill/law, was given all he can eat escargot for the rest of his life. We would say that's political corruption wouldn't we? Congress is corrupt as all hell. Get rid of corporate campaign contributions, for-profit corporation lobbyists, ban the writing of bills by anyone but a senator or representative him/herself, and then maybe we'll have something closer to democracy in america.

reply

Technically only two of the Ten Commandments are covered by any nation's law: Thou Shalt Not Kill and Thou Shalt Not Steal. And music taste is thoroughly subjective--I'll bet there are gops who prefer classical over country.

Let's always remember that Zucker defected to the gops in 2004 because he just wanted to be on the winning team regardless of what team that was, and there's no greater zealot than a recent convert. Let's also remember that Phone Booth was the last profitable movie Zucker did.

Team America is anything but right wing based. It's a leftist film, which criticizes the right wing, but shows how it can work in litary or movie terms.

reply

Um, perhaps you're new to political analysis in "litarchure". I would say that the film had "liberal" and "conservative" perspectives, much like most thinking people.

reply

They portrayed Michael Moore as a socialist and Hollywood celebrities as F.A.G.S. who live in a fairy tale world believing IRAQ was a paradise before we got there. They sung the idea of war against terrorists as a necessary evil. Since no other topics were discussed I'd say this is Right Wing. Plus Matt Stone and Trey Parker are life long republicans.

reply

"Plus Matt Stone and Trey Parker are life long republicans."

This is in no way remotely close to being true.

reply

They probably converted after 9/11 because back then it was the cool thing to do. Never mind that they're stuck on cable and can't get any real actors to do voices on their show.

reply

[quote]Never mind that they're stuck on cable and can't get any real actors to do voices on their show.[\quote]

They have had name actors on their shows in their early years. However, they like to give them meaningless bit parts. For example, George Carlin did the dog in the gay dog episode. Not a talking dog either. Seinfeld wanted to do a voice and they want him to be a bird so Seinfeld didn't do it. They did have Jennifer Anniston do an actual voice. I remember seeing the actor's names in the beginning credits sometimes, that's the only way you'd know they were in it. They didn't want to be like the Simpsons.

As far as the republicans go, I read years ago they were. Stone is supposedly a registered Republican where Parker is a libertarian. Both tend to have Libertarian viewpoints and you can easily see it in their works going back to before 9/11. They are more traditional conservative more than the bible thumping, big government hypocrite republicans of today.

reply

That was George Clooney as Sparky the gay dog, not Carlin.

reply

Also incorrect. They said that Clooney voiced the gay dog as a dig on Clooney, who was a good sport about it. Clooney actually did a voice in the movie.

reply

A Libertarian's just a Republican who likes to use drugs. I took one look at the Libarbarian utopia and said to myself "Hey, I could be a warlord here..."

reply

Matt Stone & Trey Parker are libertarians not republicans

reply

face palm

reply

Couldn't agree with you more. It could have been pretty good given the material, but ended up just being a god awful turd of a movie.

reply

I know this review is 7 years old, but I'm still irritated that IMDB lacks a way to give the reviewer a hi-five. Perfect analysis.

reply

Wow, I am applauding you for your sound logic! A movie that gets positive reviews, overwhelmingly? Pshaw, that's just bias! And a movie getting mostly negative reviews! BLASPHEMY!!

You better watch your precious bodily fluids, man.

Dear jackass - The reason this "film" got minimal critical attention is not because of its politics, but because (a)it starred Kevin freakin' Farley, (b)was directed by a has-been who's last GOOD movie came out in 1994, and (c)its biggest box office draw was probably Kelsey Grammer. Not exactly a movie for the masses. In fact, if not for the laughable conservative agenda (I'm all for the right expressing its opinion, but I could have presented more sophisticated arguments in 5th grade social studies), nobody would have paid a bit of attention to this steaming pile. It was an AWFUL movie, regardless of your political affiliation.

For the record, David Zucker's last effort, Superhero Movie, was also reviewed a mere 48 times (compared to An American Carol's 42). Chalk that one up to the "leftist lie machine" as well?

reply

Never mind the fact that this movie is god awful and embarrassing. I'm sure nobody involved was upset to see it die a quiet death. So sad to see some of the guys responsible for Airplane and Naked Gun making this ham-fisted garbage - and can't the conservatives in Hollywood find a better vehicle than this to make their points?

reply

If there is one thing more offensive than politically driven screenplays it is the way in which people are so utterly blinded by their own political views. You don't have to be einstein to realise this is just a very bad movie. It doesn't matter which end of the twisted political spectrum you claim to be on.

reply

David Zucker chose not to have it screened for critics

reply

Which means even David Zucker knew it sucked, swallowed, and kept the change from your nickel and was hoping for at least one day's receipts before word-of-mouth killed it.

reply

Right. Critics would only have killed this movie. You don't keep a movie away from critics if it's any good at all! Hell, if it got bad reviews they would say it was a liberal agenda, anyway...perhaps they should have went that route since conservatives are so damn paranoid. I saw a bit of it and it was really terrible! I mean, the spoof genre is pretty much garbage in the last ten or so years with spoofs becoming too lazy to come up with original titles (starting with "Scary Movie", but going down in quality control totally with "Date Movie"). And even among those, "An American Carol" is at the bottom of the heap of garbage....crap like "Superhero Movie" might have not lost THAT much of it's production cost.

reply

Hell, critics hate EVERYTHING because they're wannabes/failures who are going Scorched Earth on the industry that has yet to recognize their self-perceived genius. For a long time I've gone by the rule of thumb that I'm going to have the exact opposite experience the critics had, because that tends to be the case. Funny how the Party Of Personal Responsibility loves to blame everyone but themselves for their failures.

reply

Well, I saw the end of An American Carol, and it was one of the least funny movies I've seen. I could care less if a right-wing slanted movie is made, but if It's supposed to be a comedy, there should be laughs.

Regarding Team America, they made fun of the left and right alike. They made the left look like a bunch of wusses and the conservatives to look like psychos. They were equal opportunity offenders.
