Funniest subtleties in the film?

There are so many of them in this film, but for me:

the cameras deliberately panning to make the boom mics visible
O'Leary's nameplate on his desk
"The militants turn, startled!"

reply

"Sarcastically I'm in charge!"
"Who saw that coming? I mean, who saw who threw that?"

Exactly. Boo.

reply

"Well I hope it's not like that time you promised your mother, ON HER DEATHBED, that you were gonna..." as Black Dynamite's trying to dramatically hang up the phone without looking.

reply

If your mother was here today she'd be spinning in her grave!

Exactly. Boo.

The typical car drives of a cliff and blows up in mid air for no reason.

and the fact that the first car that does that is a completely different car from what chicago wind was driving

reply

LOL! That was good and I think they used the same scene near the end of the movie to show another car blow up.

Lol. I didn't even get that till just now 

I particularly liked the fight scene where the one guy was supposed to make it look like he's punching the other guy but ends up decking him instead. The injured guy grabs his face, yells out "Motherfu-", and they quickly cut to another take. That was hilarious.

reply

When they cut to the other take, it was another actor entirely! Like the first actor got accidentally hit and walked off the production.

Man, there were so many jokes I didn't get till just now reading them here.

Poorly Lived and Poorly Died, Poorly Buried and No One Cried

The whole scene with the guy reading the stage directions as well as his lines.

Watch Black Dynamite's face. First time ("The militants turn startled") he is kind of like...oooohkay...I'll roll with it "I ...walked in." But when the "Sarcasticaly I'm in charge" bit comes, you can see him giving a "oh COME ON, Director, say cut already!" look off camera before he continues the scene, though his eyes keep flitting to the side watching for the cut that never comes.

The tear that disappears and reappears every shot.

There should only be 3 security levels: Jesus Christ!, God Dammit!, **** Me! - Lewis Black NP: Mercyful Fate - Melissa

When Black Dynamite is give this big speech and plan, and one of his crew members cock their guns in the middle of him talking. The pause and stare-back is so hilarious

reply

I don't know about subtleties, but the three funniest lines in the movie are (not counting Dynamite! Dynamite!):

- "I am smiling."
- "Euphoria, shut the *beep* up! I know that was you! I ain't even gotta look! I should send you to Crenshaw Pete with his hot-ass coat hangers, b****. Would you like that?"
- "Ha-ha! I threw that s*** before I walked in the room!"
- "I get off in fifteen minutes. You right about that, sugar. You right about that."
- "Shh. Mama, you're gonna wake up the rest of the bitches."
- "Now Aunt Billy, how many times have I told you not to call here and interrupt my Kung Fu!"
- "But until then, you need to shut the *beep* up when grown folks is talking."
- "Tiny. Get Pimpin Jake out of my trunk. Tell him the rest of my money by Wednesday or I'll make him stick himself."
- "My momma said my daddy's name was Black Dynamite." "Err, uhh, hush up little girls. A lot of cats have that name."
- "The old birthday candle trick from 'Nam! Just when you think it's out..."

reply

My favorite was the interaction between Gloria and Dynamite after leaving the orphanage.
Dynamite; "Can I give you a lift somewhere?"
Gloria: "No, I'm just going down the street for something to eat."
Dynamite: "Cool, I'll drive you."

"Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything."

Okay. Here's an actual subtle item, rather than all the glaring mistakes that everyone laughs at. I'm sure this is 100% intentional on their part. Gloria is an important character in the first half of the film. It's her who turns Black Dynamite on to the problem of smack in the community and starts him on his crusade and she's the main love interest in the film. But once Black Dynamite has sex with her (using the classy pickup line "you can hit the strees or hit the sheets, I don't care. I you can go, or you can come.") she drops out of the movie. It instead becomes about Black Dynamite and his crew kicking ass and taking names. She then reappears out of nowhere at the very end. This is IMO intentional and is symptomatic of two things 1) the idea, sometimes true in reality, that men involved in the revolutionary movements of the 60s and 70s valued women more as sexual partners than as revolutionary partners, and 2) that a lot of films like this are rather poorly written and do things like set up a major character like Gloria and then let her just drop out of the story.

"Unless Alpert's covered in bacon grease, I don't think Hugo can track anything."

I think your second point is very correct and it was definitely intentional-
Characters like Gloria were a plot device in the movies this parodies-
and they parodied that perfectly with her.

Who invited E.T. -?

This gem is laden with social commentary so your first point may be as valid as the second.

What I got out of the very first scene, the Anaconda Malt Liquor commercial, (made in Georgia) was this: Using this newly exploited black audience to dump your trash movies on to make a quick buck is no better than targeting a minority with a booze commercial. Admittedly, I don't know that much about blaxploitation cinema so maybe that's just what I want to see.
