Review of Bio Slime
Sorry but "Bio Slime" is such a better title. "Contagion" is so generic! This is a fun movie. Very ambitious concept for what looks like an exceptionally low budget film. Always cool to see someone bringing Eastern horror sensibilities to the west. It seemed very Japanese inspired. The movie is riddled with great horror sequences, and inspired by some of the best. If you're going to steal ideas, you might as well pull from the best, and Bio-Slime is nothing less than a low budget love letter to the movies that clearly inspired this filmmaker.
There's all kinds of problems. But for every sh!tty performance or generic plot element, there's three cool bits. I would say my biggest complaint is the cliche origin of the creature. I think they should have focused more on the porno industry angle the movie had, which ultimately served no purpose in the film. The top secret government briefcase just didn't fit. They could have gotten much more creative than that, and should have looked more toward STDs, the bowels of the porno industry, and the seedy nature of that business for inspiration of a monster/demon. There was a great opportunity missed there. The Bio-Slime would have worked much better as a blatant commentary on the evil of the porn industry.
That said, they went ahead and gave the creature character, and I loved how he was so old he did not remember his original name. It's almost as if there were two conflicting ideas about the monster. One based in pulp / generic science fiction, and the other a more original supernatural concept. The idea of it being some kind of demon needed more fleshing out.
It was cool though. I applaud anyone getting something like this off the ground, and clearly there was a lot of supportive people who believed in the project who clearly worked their asses off to make it happen. My dollar is in for a sequel.
