I haven't seen the movie yet but in the book the detective says she's dead when he gets to the scene.

Yeah it's never made clear in the movie. She certainly looks dead at the time, but the only other time it's mentioned is when the biker says he heard he shot his client's mother.

He heard he shot her, but that doesn't mean she's dead.
