Why did Jesus Martinez stop the interview with Mick Haller in prison?

During the interview with Mick in the prison, Jesus Martinez got very agitated/scared when Mick showed him the photo of Louis Roulet. He immediately jumped up and called for the guard to get him out. Does anyone know why?

reply

He thinks Haller is setting him up. He hasn't heard from Haller in years, went into prison a naive kid and is now a hardened inmate. He realizes that Haller is asking him questions that Haller already knows the answers to, so Martinez thinks he's being used again. Plus, why would he help out the lawyer who originally refused to put on a defense for him?

"I'd never ask you to trust me. It's the cry of a guilty soul."

reply

Thanks for the explanation. Now it makes sense to me :)

Setting him up how?

"Setting him up how?"

Good question, because how much more could he actually screw the guy over, an innocent man on a life sentence.

I wouldn't say that Haller refused to put a defense for him. He urged him to accept the deal to take the death penalty off the table. Apparently in his judgment, it looked like a sure loser of a case.

It still doesn't make sense. He has nothing to lose by talking to Haller and seeing what he has to say about the guy in the photo.

We, the audience, know that, but he doesn't.

reply

Right. It was whatever that french word is for stupid.

Someone like Martinez isn't going to snitch.

reply

This is what I think.

Martinez got life for a crime he didn't commit, and that must be exceptionally hard to accept, no one believed him, not even his lawyer, and years later this very same lawyer shows up in San Quentin to talk to him, and Haller looked like he believes Martinez, and this is what frightened Martinez, what if Haller is onto something but who would believe him after these years, cause it's very hard to prove, so Martinez didn't even want to have his hopes up, so to avoid the disappointment he just left.
It only took 5-6 seconds to call for the guards after he saw Roulet's mugshot, and when Haller realized Martinez just recognized Roulet, they both knew that that's the guy who set both of them up. But how the hell are you gonna prove it?

reply

Nope, makes no sense.

reply

If I were Martinez and my former lawyer had possible intel on the actual killer, I'd be pretty enthused. It might've lead to an early release from prison for him so I don't get Marinez' reaction either.

reply

The consensus here - it was a ridiculous non-sequitur. Made no sense - like this guy wouldn't jump at the chance to get out of prison? Bad, sloppy writing. There's your answer.
