I was somehow in and out with this movie...until I saw that his pal Frank was killed. From what I gathered, Frank was an ex-cop, who was gay. Who Killed him and why?

after his death the cops are digging thru his apartment and bryan cranston remarks that there are so many pictures of one guy in the abode, implying frank was gay

Yeah, plus it's confirmed in more detail in the novel.
