Was Robert gay? I mean Vera is women(atleast looks like), but originally it's a man. And that man indirectly killed his daughter. And yet he like having sex with he/she or whatever that thing is. I don't know, it's very suspicious...

By that point in the stort, his mind is too far gone that normal ideas of relationships and morality are gone. He punishes Vicente by inadertantly/eventually turning him into a carbon copy of his wife, albeit with practically impenetrable skin. Once he's finished, he doesn't see Vicente anymore, only Vera/Gal. And she is his second attempt to save his wife and crumbled sanity.
