Uncomfortable about the Portrayal of African Americans

I just watched MNIK from NetFlix. On the whole I enjoyed the film very much. The love story and the lack of cynicism of Khan that seemed, to me at least, very genuine and though the movie was long it pulled me in for those reasons.

However there was some things that I had to suspend my disbelief a little more than usual. Some of the racists saying things like "bloody packy" for example. I'm pretty sure that term is a British/Commonwealth racist term, nobody in the US would use it.

I was able to look past most of these due to fact that the movie is from India. I don't watch that many foreign films and whenever I saw something that made me scratch my head I just told myself "It's Indian, they most certainly have a different culture, and thus come from a greatly different vantage point than myself."

....now with that being said...

I just couldn't get over their portrayal of African Americans when Khan entered that freedmen village in Georgia (at least I assumed it was settled by freedmen, the film never elaborated). This is the type of depiction that American cinema has been trying to overcome for decades. I felt incredibly uncomfortable throughout that entire section of the movie.

When Khan returned to help the relief effort I half expected the mother to yell something like "Ohhh Massa Khan I be so happy youse back. Thank Lord Jesus Massa Khan is back!!!" I understand that an Indian movie has different motifs, narrative and character structures and acting styles, however I would hope that the writers of this movie could look a little more into the history of racism in this country and portray rural African Americans in the South with more accuracy and less like a modern day minstrel show!

well this is not a perfect film, it has flaws, but the theme and the acting of the characters are the best things of the film. Its a very good movie but its an excellent movie...!
